Well after turning the big 45 today  I have to put this news clipping up.
This bloke was only 46 and out doing exactly what we Old Bulls do, riding our trailbikes in the bush. With all this heat and Humidity about I think now is a good time to seriously have a fair dinkum look at our health, I know I have had a few issues lately like High Blood pressure, stress and carrying a few extra tyres
Make sure you get to a Dr at least once a year for a check up for your families sake.
Take it easy on the Hot days and drink plenty of fluids.
RIP mate and condolencesto your family.Ollie
November 18, 2010 at 8:49 am #190956Ollie, last weekend’s ride had me thinking, I stacked my XR and pulled a Hamstring picking it up, out of the mud. I was puffing like a steam train (like the ones that come through Wauchope) At 45 I have been neglecting my health a bit. (Winnie Reds and a six pack a day), it became obvious that my life style is catching up on me, I was rooted.
The last time I saw a doctor was when I flipped the XR and ended up in plaster, going on 2 years ago.
I best go and get checked out.
On the list is
sun cancers(done a lot of fishing and surfing)
Prostate (the idea of that freaks me out)
Blood pressure
my shoulder that has been giving me some curry.(apparently some things don’t fix themselves)Stories like Ollie’s post, make you think about your own mortality a bit.
Movember is a good cause and got me thinking about me and my family.
If you have a few bucks to spare, click on Hatto’s Movember thread and make a donation.Regards
MickNovember 18, 2010 at 9:34 am #190957Hi Guys
I total agree with what you both say, I my self only have 1/4 of a kindney left high blood pressure and high cholesterol and it is only a mount of time for a transplant. But only 4 months ago I had to go under because of my prostate numbers were high I was luck ever thing was ok.But I’m due in next week again for another round Hopefully all is good.
All I can say that men at our age need to make sure we check everthing out not just for us but for our family’s we own them that.
Cheers

November 18, 2010 at 10:27 am #190964If we treated our bodies as well as we treated our bikes they would last forever
Get to your doctor for a full service once a year and you will avoid most nasty surprises. It only take three viles of blood and two samples of urine and your good to go.
Just do it!

November 19, 2010 at 2:41 am #190958About 2 1/2 yrs ago i turned the big 50.
I had high blood pressure and a few extra kgs on board.
I didn’t realise how unfit i was until i had a ride at Louee and didn’t really enjoy it, in fact i spent more time off the bike resting than riding.
Decided to do something about it.
Moved the bikes up one end of the garage, put in some gym equipment that i bought off ebay and went on a protien lifestyle change (read diet).
I wasn’t trying to become Mr Super Fit but just feel a bit healthier.
I had all the usual excuses about not having enough time and not being able to maintain a regular diet (which is basically a cop out).
Anyway i managed to loose 30kgs in about 7 months and have kept it off.
I walk every morning no matter if i am at home or travelling. I work out in my garage gym while watching DVDs at night when the family is watching TV. I can easily maintain the protein diet because i am basically a carnavore and protein is mainly meat.
I have been able to significantly reduce my blood pressure medication to a point where i expect to come off it totally on my next visit to the doctor. It’s not easy but if i can do it anyone can.
The only real issue is that you have to want to do it.
Once you start it bcomes a habit.Oh! by the way Mick, get that prostate checked, it is a blood test now, not like the old days, although they will still check the old fashioned way if they think there is a problem.(or if you like you can request the old way! up to you)
I have had a brush with prostate problems and if i hadn’t had regular visits with the GP i would have been unaware of the dangers.(early detection is best).

MickOnly 45, bullshit. If thats correct I suggest you get to the doctor sooner rather than later.
I was only thinking of this yesterday when I was a good 15km into the bush on my mountain bike by my self. If I was to push to hard and blow a valve it would be along time before someone found me. I have to go do a stress ECG for work next month so it will be good to see the results.

November 19, 2010 at 4:16 am #190959I’ve still gotta get a heart stress test but I got the all clear for the prostate blood test. This was on Doctors orders. Go see ya doctor and get them to sort out what ya need. I’ve now joined a gym and try and go there 3 times a week. I take the kids sometimes and pump some iron and do some aroebic stuff. It’s all good fun and a bit of a laugh aswell to watch “the gorillas” as my sons call the big body builders. I feel heaps stronger overall and have a bit more spring but i still have a fair way to go. I think the body I had in me twenties has gone for good though  I am enjoying it, so it’s working out ok but slow and steady is the go for me.
I’m tryin to party less and workout more but it is a stuggle sometimes as old habits die hard. The motovation to be there for the wifey and kids is winning out at the moment. :cheer:
November 19, 2010 at 5:41 am #190993I think this is an excellent topic considering the average age group of OB riders. To any of the smokers out there, you would obviously be aware that giving up smoking is the single best thing you can do for your health. After smoking for twenty years and numerous half arsed attempts to give up I finally tried CHAMPIX on the suggestion of a friend. I do not want to sound like I am promoting this shit but if you are struggling to kick the death sticks this shit is the bomb.
December 23, 2010 at 4:41 pm #190996yep, magic pills. I give up 3 years ago with these. recommend to anyone, worked for a friend too! Both of us smoked for 15 years or so.
