It was miserable so I went back to bed for an hour and then spent time with the kids. Then Mick rang up at 10.00 and said he was still keen to go as the weather was on the improve. No more prompting needed. The new front tyre was put on the night before and the brake callipers pumped back up to pressure (this time). Gear was ready to go and was in the same pile on the floor after last ride, including a half full camel back. Mmmm better clean that out. Now just had to fix the sons puncture on his pushbike and the BMW purred up the street. We were off.

The roads were damp so things were taken pretty steady through Yaramalong and up through Cedar Brush Ck Rd. Just be Careful if you are going through Wyong Creek area as the speed limit has changed while they do the dam link work, one of our mates got booked and lost his licence the other day there. Mick let me know this later as I didn’t notice the change and sailed through without a care. From Buckerty we rambled down along Murrays run and missed Laguna as we went the back road to Wollombi. These roads are so beautiful, peaceful and scenic. I could see Mick’s eyes were like dinner plates, through his mirror, at one corner as the road turned a little quicker than he was ready, the beamer was slid in nicely and came out the other side like true professional. The hamburgers at lunch were much better than last time I was there with just the rite amount of juice dribbling down your fingers toped off with a cold one for good measure.
We talked to three guys there on dirt bikes that had just came through the Convict/ Settlers road and the said the gate was open and the conditions were exceptional. We should have asked where the entry gate was as well as it has been some time either one of us had gone through that way and only once each. Mick had gone through a different way and was looking for a different gate. But the illusive gate was found eventually and we were on our way. The guys were right, the track was in fine condition as we rolled through with some of the best erosion humps, put in there just for the bikers Im sure. This track is very scenic and runs along side of some steep drop offs and precipices. Its about 30kms to the putty. And 50Km back on the Big Yengo Track if you go that way. There was roos everywhere at the start and one was trying its best to race me. It was no match for the 640 and as I looked back to see if it would challenge the BMW there was no doubt they were on a definite collision course, with nothing I could do to warn the old fella. The roo was coming up to Mick on the blind side of some trees and I wasn’t sure if he had seen it. Next look back around saw them getting closer. Then, Looking back again, the roo within a meter of colliding with Mick skidded on something and collided with the tree then, shit, I had to look forward again, and back, the roo staggered the other way and we both pulled up ranting and waving our arms telling each other how close it had been.
I don’t know what happened to those hours in between but when we emerged at the Putty Rd, the sun was setting on the horizon as quick as the beer went down at the pub. There were a couple of pics taken and a unanimous decision to take the tar home.
Vents zipped up. Check. Ear Plugs in. Check. Everything zipped and tucked in and off we went. The windy part of the Putty Rd was wet, including moss on the side of the road and edges, getting darker, tight and twisty, we had a ball but you had to be careful. By the time we refuelled at Broke it had was completely dark, the moon was rising and I was glad it was full and glowing lighting some of our path. The smells that come to your senses while riding always amaze me. Going through Broke in the dark with the ever-present smell of decaying roo warning you of their presence. The waft of the chicken farms is an old favourite to close your mouth and hold your breath till you are just not quite past it. And the smell of a barbeque at a very foggy Cooranbong had me drooling, no, that isn’t drool, its my nose and it was getting colder and colder. This was another excellent adventure. Around 300Km.
We are going to do this one again soon but head most of the way back on the dirt. And perhaps leave a little earlier in the morning. We will post it up. Maybe close to the 17th next month. TBA. Photos to come.
    Cheers Gavb

Some photos from our day out follow. Can’t really add much to what Gav said but next time we will leave earlier and do most of the ride on the dirt and not spend 2 hours riding on the tar in the dark to get home. Bit of a worry travelling in that area on dusk with all the skippies around. The dead smells as you rode along indicated the ones that strayed too far onto the road. We followed a Landcruiser into broke to let him clear the road for us.
