I think this might help soften the blow to the “finance minister” if we post genuine money saving maintenance tips here.
I was in the bearing shop yesterday (Central Coast Bearings) and asked if they sell O ring and X ring chains to fit dirt bikes.
The answer: YES, they are about $125 for 10 feet including a circlip type joining link.
No doubt they sell extra joining links too.December 16, 2009 at 8:48 pm #165486Certainly better than forking out $160+ for 120 links.
December 16, 2009 at 9:56 pm #165488What is the brand of chain?
I only ask as I run the RK GB520EXW and they retail for around $190.00 + depending where you buy it. They don’t stretch on my bike, I recently fitted a cheaper brand name chain with the motard setup and found it to be stretching at an alarming rate. It is a special O ring design chain but I am unsure if its the chain or just the extra stress the the motard setup places on the chain as there is no wheel spin and all the torque places extra strain on the chain.,I would be interested in trying it, do they come in gold?

December 16, 2009 at 10:10 pm #165491Top one WikKraut, I did this years ago when working in an industrial plant, I used them on my work Roadies and all was sweet, and the head engineer was always suggesting stuff like this, I still have a few joining links from that era.
Another one
Most brake pads for bikes 98-08 are the same shape, yep they’re interchangeable that way, the compunds may differ but that can be a distinct advantage to some.I think most know this but anyway
Clear safety glasses for humid or wet weather riding, personally I bought a set of the latest “goggle” type (similar to harley riders or swimming googles) $20 at the safety show and they work great.

December 17, 2009 at 12:07 am #165492Spoke to CC Bearings again, the brand of chain could not be specified as it changes with the type of chain etc but he said they are good quality ones made in Japan.
You dont neccessarily have to buy a 10 ft length but it depends on the type and length you need.
He said he sell quite a few chains for bikes (road, enduro – whatever) and never has any come back with problems. Not sure if he ever sold one to an XRsixfiddy tragic though

December 19, 2009 at 9:25 pm #165513Supercheap auto have bike oils.
Castrol Super GPS 1Ltr, $14,90 – about $5 cheaper than bike shops.
They also have Silkolene oil and air filter oils.December 29, 2009 at 7:09 am #165487ok i’ll put my 2c worth up.
just before the vic snow ride .28,29,30th august 09. i wanted a new battery for the 640, but i was not going to get one sent in time.
i was not going to buy one of those ebay self mix cheapish (bout $50-70) again, the one i bought about 12 months before hand died some time before, and i decided i Needed to replace it for a ride in an unknown area/place.
i buy a bit of stuff through the local Jaycay/Altronic store.
one of the workers is into bikes- mainly road and had not long sold his TL1000.
i asked if one of the SLA= sealed lead acid batteries would work…..and he had used one in it (TL1000) without any dramas.
i took my old one in to measure it up.
the range they had were either too big for the batt. box or too small. but they had one that was just a few or 10mm smaller lengthways and width, but close enough to the same height.
the only down side is they only have flat/blade connecters on them. and both connecter tabs are on the same end of the batt.
i just slid the loop fitting over the flat tab on the new batt. and soldered it straight to it, i made up a new earth lead to reach across the other side of the batt. box and soldered it on too.
verdict= : very happy to date. $36.00. it cranks the 640 over cold or hot without hesitation even with the headlight on and the thermo fan running without hesitation.
i will look up the numbers and amp specs etc. and update the post sometime soon.
