Tiny and me headed out today for what was my first ride back since breaking my arm on my mountain bike.
We got to Clarence nice and early and decided to park at the pine forest camping area and head out from there. Although it had rained all week the early morning weather was dry but over cast with a bit of fog in the air.
From here we headed out along Black Fellows hand trail down through Wolgan Gap. We avoided the single trails today as I was not sure how my arm would hold up. We went across the road and did the usual run through to Capertee.
From Capertee we headed out to along the Turon River Track. This track has a lot of river crossing which during normal times arm pretty shallow. With torrential rain all week we expected them to be deep and flowing and we were not disappointed.
The first 3 crossing went without incident, river deep and flowing but we powered through. The fourth crossing was probably the shortest crossing we did all day but it was flowing hard and as we found out deep in the middle. Tiny’s Husky sucked in some water on this crossing and needed to be de-watered. A small issue with a spark plug cost us some time but we eventually got it sorted and going.
From here we followed the trail through a few more river crossing and up many rocky hills bring us out to Dark Corner. Out near the Dark Corner end I had a little off trail exercion which gave my mending arm a workout. I hit a tree root that was angled across the track on a left hand bend with my front wheel. The result was me spearing head on at a large gumtree. I managed to dodge the large gum and hit a smaller one a bit deeper into the bush. The small tree brought me to a sudden stop with much pain to my not yet properly mended arm. To rub salt into the wound the tree then had the hide to break off half way up and fall on me.
Up until we got to dark corner the weather had been great but it was now starting to rain. By the time we got to Sunny Corner it was less then sunny, it was pissing down. We did a quick road run to the fuel stop at Yetholme.
We refueled at Yethholme and waited for the rain to let up a little then did a run back to Palmers Oakey and Turron Gates. It was here I found a surface that my new Pirelli’s don’t work on, wet hardwood bridges. Nearly got to the other side of the bridge then the front let go, leaving me to slide along the road. A quick re-alignment of my gear lever and we were going again.
From here we went up over I think it was Mount Horrible, well the weather was horrible anyway, and made our way back to Capertee. By now my arm was starting to really ache so we did a dash to the car back along Blackfellows.
All up we did 240km and had a good ride. My physio may be pissed though when he finds out I crashed my bike again.

February 14, 2010 at 12:31 pm #171149Hey good report lucky to still ride after that little get off and lucky your car wasn’t tampered with by the local passerbys.
February 14, 2010 at 6:33 pm #171163Good ride report there Scotty, you certainly gave your arm a baptism of fire. The DRZ is the wrong colour yellow for pushing trees over. We have a heap of Caterpillar yellow paint here should you need it……

Before yeserdays ride I was up to about 95% movement in my elbow. I recon im back to 85% today.
As for the cutting down trees Tiny did mention he’s the one riding the chainsaw.
