I’ve heard the WR’s don’t handle that well on the road? Is this the same for all lighter 250’s

    Handy thread this one
As I have a mate at work who wants to get back into riding and has been asking me plenty of questions.
I have steered him clear of the heavier machines and towards the KTM/WR 250’s
I don’t think it will be long before he’ll be wanting to come out with us so a lighter bike would be the go.
He is a fitter and should be able to do all his maintenance
We will be keeping an eye on this thread.

Well Jeffro sort of did cause Flying Fish`s is a WR250R actually and it goes anywhere she wants it to go.

Recently on the last 2 Day Nav ride, she told us that it has the same rear tyre she put on at Hawker on the APC Rally last July and it had done a few decent rides since as well  So they are also kind on tyres !!!

PTW tried to ride the pants off Wolfman Steve`s WRR on last years Scrapheap Challenge, trying to keep up with TB n the Tenere 750 (and was always right on the back wheel too I heard)

Yep,, a real No Brainer I reckon.
Very light, very capable, very fuel efficient, enough poke to get yopu out of trouble if needed,,, all good

Looks like there is a resounding pitch towards the WR250. Didn’t even consider them actually.

They are pretty cheap too (always good to keep the MOF happy).

Oh well if enduro’s are crap on the road………I’ll just have to get a road bike too

Alyssa, I might take you up on that offer. I’m a bit like you I’ll just cope with what ever I get really. Oh and bit easier for you to swap bikes….you’re married to a rider so he understands. My other half is already talking divorce if I change bikes within 5yrs after getting this one. As he is the sole income provider (for next 2yrs) mustn’t upset the hand that feeds you ;)

I’ll do a bit of searching for the WR250.
What if you were offered a 09 TE 310 husky with only 3500 on it for 6.5K?

Too expensive for the Husky, they can be had brand new on road for 10k. The 2009 model is the older heavier engine, 2011 onwards (I think) is the “X light”engine, based on a 250.

My brother has a 2012 model is very happy with it, he is not a beginner though.

That Looks like a good bike B) price is a little high I reckon ;)

I suggested WR250R also as seat hight is 60mm lower ;) and very Good on the road.

That looks like a tidy bike and Stms WR 250f was a great bike, as he was also on his L’s at the time it served a couple of purposes :P

I think the advice you got on the WR 250r was spot on , very capable bike and super reliable adv mount too. All you’d need is a larger tank and some bags and you’ve got 2 bikes in 1.

Price is an issue though. I really don’t want to spend 7k on a bike, 5.5 k would be better at the moment.
yeah the WR would be a good start if I could get it cheap enough. Replacement a parts cost is a concearn too.

Thats cheap for an 2010, but it’s the k’s that are a bit high

They are a great bike though ;)

My experience with the WR250f was very positive. My maintenance was all preventive and as simple as oil and filters. My bik did around 15000 km on the original top end!
Nickj was running a DRZ at the time and my bbike required nothing more than his. Parts are not a problem.

    Hi Oldgirl,

The decision on which bike to get is a tricky one. From your posts on the forum, it kinda looks like you plan to do a mix of riding, both trails and singles through to adventure and a bit of the Navigation Series. Also an important consideration is your experience and riding level (both of which you have already discussed).

For my two bobs worth, I highly Highly HIGHLY recommend a WR250R. This is for a few practical reasons. Firstly you can’t kill these things!! Between the punishments that Steve “Wolfman” Smith, TB and PTW have given Wolfies WR, and it still performs day after day.

I have had mine for a couple years and I have asked it to do everything from the APC to single trails to highway riding and it has done it easily…..except perhaps the single trails (but I do have it set up for adventure riding).

This bike is the ultimate in no fuss maintenance. It has a 40,000km valve clearance check and 10,000km service interval. My ability with the spanners is limited, and even I can maintain this bike. It is a very reliable bike!!! It’s also solidly built, I haven’t managed to break it in any serious way and same for Wolfies WRR.

The WRR is very forgiving for more inexperienced riders and on the flip side, it can easily match the larger adventure machines on the trails we do. The brilliant thing about this bike is that it can change with what you want to do, trust me you will not out grow this bike in 5 years. The only exception to this is if you want to serious single trails, then it might be a bit heavy and tall.

I think you have mentioned they are a little expensive, but for what you get they are not. I think I paid $6500 for mine a bit over 2.5 years ago and it is still going strong and will perfectly suit what I want for a few more years yet.
Every time I think about getting a new bike I can never come up with something that can outperform this bike. OK some of the larger bikes would be great and have more power, but I just can go past the ease of maintenance, reliability and outstanding ability of this small capacity bike.

I live not far from Alyssa, so if you are planning to have a go on her bike I will bring mine along and you can ride it as well. Might be a great comparison of the two WR250’s.

I’m with Ollie on this one WR250R would be ideal. TTR250 cheaper if you need to. I’ve owned a KTM250EXC-F – I don’t recommend it no matter how cheap.

Thanks for that info Fish. I’d like to try these nav man rides they look like fun so a bike that is adaptable is probably the way to go.

I went and spoke to the guys at penrith yamaha this morning. They don’t have anything in at the moment except for a new 2011 wr250 for 10K.
The salesman said that getting a TTR would be a step down from the WR.

I’ve been looking at Strucky’s TE310 (09) bc I know the history of the bike etc. but TB keeps telling me to be patient and wait for the right bike.

I’ll never be a great rider so a beginner bike will last me for a long time I think.

    Great advice guys Thanks
