I have mentioned in the past that my son’s 06 KX 85 has done more hours than I could count, which includes two full race seasons ,a ton of “on the pipe” flat tracking and bush riding. All on the original piston and rings. This alone convinced me the genuine pistons are the go. After picking up a genuine Kawasaki rebuild kit for the KX at a great price from ebay, I tore into it last night.
It was a bigger job than I realised, as you have to all but strip the bike to get the cylinder off.
Having never rebuilt a water cooled 2 banger,it was all new territory or me, hence the bewildered look on my face.(Before anyone points it out, no the chain isn’t rusty,it is a gold chain and it just looks rusty in the light)
Anyhow it all came apart, with no worries. Once I removed the old piston, I inspected it and was shocked to see that the engine was probably one race away from disaster. The skirt had a whopping big crack in it just waiting to let go!!!
I am counting my blessings as I reckon it was a bee’s whisker from a monumental failure! Once I got the bike back together, 3hrs after I started pulling it down. Three kicks and away it went!!!
Not having a manual for it, I need some “run in” advice though. What is the run in procedure for the new top end?? Just let him ride it as normal or what?
February 8, 2010 at 7:40 pm #170634I think I have a picture here that shows that chain is rusty, must have been the old chain
You have more arse then a bus load of poofters Mick I see it time and time again  You do minimum maintenance with those kids bikes fuel and ride fuel and ride and dodge a bullet here again (half ya luck  ) Yeah it was close for sure, maybe next time earlier?
I wont answer the run in yet, the two stroke lords here may have a newer method?
Good job mate but I am still shaking my head how you get away with it
Nice photos Conner?

Mate I do a bit more on those bikes than I let on. They are maintained very well, oils filters etc. They are tidy units and they serve us well. you never see me running around at the races like a chook with my head cut off.

Yeah righto Mick we know
And as for the track running around again we know

The piston will make a great shed dust collector

February 8, 2010 at 9:05 pm #170635Mick make sure you get it fully up to operating temp, then for 5 mins dont let Connor get the band happening for to long but dont be shy about it, most importantly run a slightly higher oil mix for the run in, again 5 mins worth of non sustained revs and Bobs your uncle, all done and ready to race(have you got any Bobs in your family….I bet you have), cant wait to see what he thinks of the new power, should have called me and I would have brought my porting tools over

Whereas if that had’ve been me the piston would’ve come out of the cylinder and damaged my backup bike on impact

February 8, 2010 at 10:12 pm #170641Gotta love Kawasaki heavy industries. Then again I have heard that God looks after the rightious.
It was indeed a lucky break………pardon the pun.

Has your young fella done his Log Book kick start program with Dave yet?

Not yet. He’s still got a couple of months until his birthday
February 8, 2010 at 10:46 pm #170647He could probably do the KIck start now so he is ready to go as soon as he is 7. Get onto Dave and he’ll let you know the deal.
February 8, 2010 at 10:53 pm #170646Running in , pretty well everyone has their favorite method, but I agree with Mr Rat, a couple of heat cycles is all that is needed to get it all mated and the piston/bore right. Again I run a bit richer oil mix for a tank full, but usually only on bottom ends rebuilds.
no real right and wrong if you do something along Rats or My lines. And Mick that is absolutely Arse-lucky, I rebuild by performance/ note and hours, i reckon unless it’s an IT175 you can’t go wrong by that method.
Musta been the weekend for it eh, I finally pulled the young Blokes KX60 down last friday, never been done since new (only has about 40 hours tops, but got massively overheated a few months back), has pretty good burn pattern, rings are completely marshmallowed and have no tension left, and the bore has one little mark below the exhaust ports, where it looks like a ring snagged on first revolution and then settled down. Sorry to hijack a bit Mick, but have you ever seen the meat those 60s have in the bore liner?, I reckon you could get a 10mm over bore and still have more jacket left than the average bike…..
Mick how much was the topend kit for the 85?Bruce
February 8, 2010 at 11:05 pm #170648I was quoted $240 for a genuine piston, rings and the two gaskets.
I got a genuine piston, two sets of rings, gudgeon pin, bearing ,clips, two full gasket kits, a genuine tool kit all for $144 of ebay from some bike shop (Triumpth dealer) at Lismore.
February 8, 2010 at 11:49 pm #170649Perfect maintainance schedule Mick

I kinda wished I didn’t look at that piston as My kids KTM 200 has never been apart in the two years that we have had it
“Don’t touch it if it’s not broke” is my motto
On saying that we do have some of the normal issues to attend to before the Dungog ride ie Front and rear wheel bearings and brake pads, maybe some new rear rubber. Bloody bikes, I should of kept to surfing :woohoo: :woohoo:
Cheers
