Quote:I was quoted $240 for a genuine piston, rings and the two gaskets.I got a genuine piston, two sets of rings, gudgeon pin, bearing ,clips, two full gasket kits, a genuine tool kit all for $144 of ebay from some bike shop (Triumpth dealer) at Lismore.
Cool, pretty close to my home Lismore is(bikeworx also a Kwaka dealer too…, I )just got piston, two sets of rings, small end assembly, two complete gasket sets, workshop and owners manuals same way.
Now knowing you’re a highly respected “bargain hunter” Mick I feel good about the price I paid too…
Murph, your maintenance regime on 2Ts will end in tears for someone (note to self, never buy second-hand bike off Murph)

February 9, 2010 at 2:38 am #170654I cant say for sure that is the shop. I just presumed as it was posted from Lismore and it all came in a Triumpth spare parts box.
I dont get on ebay much and I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw those parts listed.

AnonymousDick has noted here with interest that the piston crack has not been discussed Dick says sure run-in is important but if Dad and the boy in question dont change their habits it will happen again. Dick is sure you will not get away with it twice.
Dick knows what has caused this but do you?
Let Dick educate you this crack has happened one particular ride when the father or the boy has not warmed the engine up sufficiently.
Dicks free lessonDad take more interest before wandering off
Boy listen to Dad he pays the bills
You are welcome

February 28, 2010 at 4:52 am #172176I always thought as a rule when you run in a 2smoker was a liitle bit of extra oil and not to hit band.Mick you were very lucky it did not let go just imagine what could of happend if the piston broke .Does the new kx have the chrome bore like the old ones?I use to have a 82 model kx80 and I never broke it! They are as tough as Hondas
March 1, 2010 at 2:15 am #172177Good pointy bits there Dick, both my children are well versed in warm-up of all things with an infernal combustion engine.
You are a smart Dick aren’t you, outside the square and all that.

March 1, 2010 at 2:32 am #172272So elaborate on warm up guys. I was caught out the other saturday showing up late and I only let the bike idle for a couple of minutes before slowly taking off. Kept it well off the pipe until I could feel heat in the radiators through my gloves. Normally I’d let her idle a while longer first then similar behaviour to follow.
March 1, 2010 at 2:37 am #172275Yeah a good point Dick, the last ride before I stripped it down, the young fella was running late for the race start and maybe he did rush out onto the track before warming it up proper. Then again it may have also had something to do with the astranomical amount of hours it had on it too.
March 1, 2010 at 2:43 am #172276AB, don’t let it idle too long, but don’t put it under load for too long. Essentially sit on the bike keeping it at a quick idle until the radiators start to get a bit of heat, then ride gently for a little until it’s at operating temp. A good visual is to watch your exhaust, they run a lot cleaner when hot.

Mick I reckon in that case
“ALL OF THE ABOVE”
are contributing factors.March 1, 2010 at 2:43 am #172277No Mick in the skirt its a warm up thing not age or time. Its been stressed before it was warm enough.
TB
March 1, 2010 at 2:49 am #172278Blue age and hrs would have cracks in stress areas, across the piston wrist pin area and crown not the skirt
TB
March 1, 2010 at 3:19 am #172282True, but don’t excessively worn rings contribute to some skirt failures as the piston slaps?
March 1, 2010 at 3:29 am #172289Not if its warmed up
Warming up is the piston growing to the correct sizeTB
March 1, 2010 at 3:30 am #172290It did have a bit of a top end rattle……….more of a fast tic tic tic at idle when cold
March 1, 2010 at 3:35 am #172292Could be an exhaust leak mick, piston speed is how fast at idle, twice as fast as idle reckon you hear that? Remember it goes down and up every counted rev
