AnonymousTb asked me about how we set up our nx for touring
This our nx650 stage 5
The bike was mint when we got. But if you happen to do stuff like drop it on a water meter. Good. It makes it look tougher. If you tear the seat cover, high light it with bright yellow tape. Never wash it until pink slip time.
The previous owner relaced the front wheel to a 17. so now the bike is the lightest steering bike ever, but it is still stable at speed (on tar).
Spare fuel. It has come in handy.
The panniers come with plastic sides so a simple frame to keep them off the mufflers
I made a mock up to get an idea of what we will need. The mock up turned out so good that it still there. The frame is just bent aluminium. Even the straight bit has a slight curve outwards so that it won’t bend inwards
The lower mount is the pillion peg. We had to fit spacers to clear racytracy’s heels
We chose usa made wolfman panniers because they sell matching fronts. Andystrapz panniers are aussie made, stronger, aussie outback style and don’t look like you are delivering mail. But those bloody cars have not run me over yet.
The front tank panniers fit the nx almost perfectly
The handle bar bag is from andystrapz
The bag on the back is an old fox bag that fits perfectly. We put a plastic box in there to give it structure and keep the stuff inside from getting wet
It holds it self on
It’s heaps better for touring than the tm

Looks new and shineyyea i thought was about time. i totally smashed the old on a log at buladelah on saturday. there was a hold up to go around a puddle, i was not keen to back off so i went around the other side, hidden behind a branch was a log
. it spat me off the bike and into the puddle:laugh: . the bike still went fine even though the pipe looked like it was in a car compactor. glen is fixing the old one but i should get a newy. so i did. i’m putting a new slug too
expansion chambers are a weak point on 2 strokes

AnonymousThe NX looks ready for some serious Easter holiday cruising now mate. You guts and the Blaxland possie will have a great time.
You do give that poor old expansion chamber on the TM a working out don’t you

I have a strange idea in the back of my mind that one day, if business turns around (a lot), I might get a more road orientated bike as well as my enduro bike. I’m leaning toward a V-Strom, but that NX does look the goods! Totally different bikes I know, but they would be used by me for the same thing! Road miles!
March 13, 2009 at 1:06 am #125672Actually Ecks I am surprised by how good mine is on the road (NX that is) Sits on 105 real good, will hold along at 110 if you want and does 120 I know that, steers nice handle great and so much cheaper than the bikes you mentioned and way more capable of road, best thing I have spend my hard earned on in a while
I have ordered my panniers today and will be using the above to set mine up

Payback!
March 13, 2009 at 1:15 am #125675Yeah TB, they always were a good machine, no doubt. I’m not looking to do any touring as such, more commuting between here & Orange for work or band, whatever. 100km+ return trips in the ute every couple of days gets tiring, and sucks a lot of fuel that would be better burnt by a 2-wheeled machine! As a road commuter the NX wouldn’t be as good as the V-Strom, simply because of fairings, seat, etc. As an adventurer it would be much better, but that’s not what I’d be getting one for. The price difference does put it in the hunt though…

I do 120Km’s a day to work and back so wouldn’t mind getting a 2 wheeled machine to crunch the miles on. Plus it would be better in traffic. I’d like a bike I could have a play on though. XR’s represent great value for money in this area. I would like a 525 KTM though motarded up for the job if I was gonna spend some more money. A big Berg (older one) would also be good but I have concerns over reliability.
The NX is another bike on the list when I get round to it. Champo’s is very clean (haven’t seen TB’s) and he (and Tracy) has heaps on fun on it.
