AS stated in another thread, my spring locknuts had come loose allowing the spring to flop about somewhat.
Once I noticed it, I thought I best reset the ride sag again.
With the help of my son (He was on the tape measure) I wound the nuts back down putting pressure on the spring again. This gave me only 50mm of sag, so I wound the nuts back up the shock, gradually taking pressure off the spring, the best I could get was 65mm before the bottom nut cleared the spring completely and was no longer putting any pressure on the spring. I am aiming for 95-100mm of sag but can’t seem to achieve it.
I am measuring the static sag with the bike upright on the floor and the ride sag with my wife holding the bars, me all kitted up on the bike (standing) and Connor doing the measurements (from the axel bolt to a mark on the side cover).
I am missing something here, but can’t work it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

September 2, 2012 at 5:57 am #228767The rear spring on your modified shock should have a free length of about 250mm. Installed in your shock you should have to wind 10mm of preload then having a spring length of 240mm. Once in the bike you should then have a static sag of around 30 – 35mm. (static is the difference between the bike sitting on the stand suspended under the bash plate with the rear wheel hanging – and the measurement between the same points with the wheels on the ground and the bike sitting under its own weight) so you are looking for about 30 – 35mm. Rider sag is the next measurement and you are looking to have around another 50 – 55mm from you static measurement giving you a total from bike suspended to it on the ground and you on it of about 85 – 90mm.
I have quickly just spoke with Nick (Tekink’s) and explained what was happening what you had done and where it was at after I had spoken with you. He was a little perplexed when I mentioned you had recently done all your suspension linkages. He said the same as me remove your wheel and remove your shock (the shock will need to come out to be sure it doesn’t catch when you check it. You need to be sure the swingarm with linkages attached (except shock) travels completely thru its travel. Like I was saying I have seen a linkage bind at a certain point because of a roller jammed. He said he had seen a spacer jam on a XR which jammed the swingarm. Are you sure the lower linkage is installed correctly, Nick said something can go in back to front or was it a spacer umm
Also check the top bolt mate they come loose mate. Not saying 100% its linkage but like you said the shock seems ok
Give me a ring tomorrow and maybe I can explain it better

September 2, 2012 at 7:29 am #228772Well there you go. I was trying to get 100mm between the bike sitting on the ground and then it sitting on the ground with me on it. So I should only be looking for 50mm on that measurement?

30 – 35mm static sag
85 – 90mm Rider sag
September 2, 2012 at 7:54 am #228796Thanks for looking into it and the call TB, I now know the errors of my ways.
An idiot armed with “some” information is just a bigger idiot until he gets the “right” information.
