Well I’ve decided to do an another type of adventure tomorrow morning on the XR400. Riding to AdventureMoto and meeting Steve at 9am to discuss/buy the following:
1. Soft Panniers (Wolfman’s)
2. Rack (may need advice on custom racks with Barretts)
3. Spot Tracker
4. Rotopax fuel packs one water, one fuel
5. Heated Grips
6. Jetboil (after reading the recent OBT thread…. thanks)
7. UTagI hate cloths shopping but get me into something like AdventureMoto and my credit card is going to scream with pain. Oh well…. nothing like a bit of pain.
I still need to think about a GPS…..
Have I missed anything on my list???
August 11, 2011 at 7:38 pm #206837Hey good job stuff the cloths shopping
Don’t know about the Roto packs is all, you would get 500 kms almost out of a tank we have worked out. I have a set and a 10 litre bladder now, reckon for the odd time I need the extra may use the bladder. I will use them but you just need to remember they will put the heaviest things on your bike out wide and you will feel the weight.
I will use mine next years round Aus trip more than likely. The jury is out on them great idea just not sure.I just reread that dribble and I am trying to say I reckon you will have the range carry your water another way
Jason at Barretts will do a good job on your racks, then people will see them and go great rack Kat
Steve will look after you

August 11, 2011 at 10:13 pm #206838Food for thought there Kat,,,,
How many more than 500k range do you want or need ????? really,,,,
A bladder would be better to use if needed, or just rolled up & stowed away when not wantedJust my 2c worth (which on my level of experience on ADV rides is worth .025c really)
Good Luck with the shopping spree,,, I am jealous as hell.
Say hi to Steve for us too hey
CheersAugust 11, 2011 at 10:20 pm #206839gunna be like christmas eve Kat….Rip the Sh$t out that plastic !!!! :cheer:
Bol :woohoo:August 11, 2011 at 10:29 pm #206840Hey kat, Fish and I went over to see Steve on Thursday and picked up some tyres and other bits and pieces. I picked up a spot tracker too for a solo trip I have in the works. Steve is a top bloke and looks after OB’s
We were like dogs with two tails in Steves Den!!
August 11, 2011 at 10:36 pm #206841Just for info,,,
I read on ADV that there have been quite a few Spot 2`s playing up of late ,,, They are not turning on at times, not sending messages & not tracking correctly apparently…
Spot is onto the problem and have replaces the bad units, but there are still a few circulating out there apparently.
One poor bloke is on his third unit :whistle:See here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=714886
So make sure you check yours as soon as you get it, don`t want to have it play up too close to a trip starting
Hopefuly the problem won`t raise its head at all (but is still a slight possibility)
August 12, 2011 at 8:11 am #206842Thanks everyone for your feedback. I think you guys are right regarding the fuel…. I think I will just go the fuel bladder instead. But thought I should get something to carry water.
Anyway…. haven’t been able to sleep… I’m cruising sites to work out a route for my first solo overnighter.

Didn’t feel a thing.
Well just finished in the garage pottering around on the bike. Had a fantastic day….
Got out there right on the dot at 9am. I was like a kid in a candy store. We firstly thought about the rack for the soft panniers and as expected its not going to be easy. Steve is going to talk to Barretts and see what they recommend.
We were able to put on a top rack and thanks to Steve and his mates we headed down to the ‘man shed’ and it was installed whilst I watched. I was drooling in the shed. It was my type of shed.
Bought a Spot Tracker and cradle and installed and activated it once I got home. I worked out that my pivot pegs mark II on my CRF230 fit on my XR400 so swapped them over. I also bought a wolfman waterproof day bag and filled it up with my tools. Lastly under advice from other OBT’er I got a UTag. So I’m one more step closer to getting ready for overnighters.
So still on the shopping list:
1. Rack
2. Soft panniers
3. cooking stove and stuff
4. GPSSteve at Adventure Moto was extremely helpful and provided lots of guidance and recommendations and on top of that got his hands dirty. Thanks to the discount the credit card didn’t scream in pain….. but looking forward to doing more business with Steve to finalise my setup.
Thanks Steve and I hope I get to ride with you one day soon so I can fly the Adventure Moto flag.
