Just a general reminder dudes,
I had a couple of hours riding this arvo not too far from home & on the return leg of a track I had already ridden twice in a 20 min period, I came ever soooo close to running over the biggest mother of a Black Snake I have ever seen
We have paddocks & wetlands behind our area, so snakes are a common thing certain times of the year, but never have I seen a Black Snake so big, or sooo aggressive either. It flattened out & had a go at me just after I had shit my pants & stalled the bike on the hill an inch from its middle  Lucky for me I had managed to roll backwards a metre so it thought better & took off into the long grass,,,
SO beware, it is time for them to reappear about now with the warmer days etc etc
Be on the lookout & enjoy the ride without ending up a bite victim
August 14, 2010 at 5:43 am #185885I nearly stepped on one at my last ride. Bloody scary. It is the only occasion when it is acceptable to squeal like a 13 yr old girl. As long as your mates don’t hear you On that note was anybody watching 7’S sunrise when Grant Denyer while out in the outback retold the story of a snake in the camp. He said the guy walked up and cracked its head off like a whip. They are protected arn’t they? Imagine if he said the Koala walked into the camp looking for water so we bashed it with a stick until its head came off!!! We would never hear the end of it. I know this is what happens and the snake in our camp had a similar fate but i would not say that on TV.

August 14, 2010 at 8:46 am #185886Maybe the wet weather had chased them out of their hihing places
It has been a pretty wet damn winter around here this year,,,I might head back out there tomorrow for another quick blast, but will now be on the lookout for sure

August 14, 2010 at 10:52 am #185889Black snakes wont hurt you Eagle. They are more scared of you than you are of them.
Yes take a photo next time. There is a big one living in a log on a track that we ride. He’s usually out sunning himself during summer. I’ll get a photo of him this year if he’s still there.
AAron, yes snakes are protected.
August 14, 2010 at 10:55 am #185890Yeah Mal, I have seen heaps of them over the years here.
But never had one flatten its head out & come at me though :blink:Was a bit weird
August 14, 2010 at 11:42 am #185917Sounds more like a Tiger snake Egale. They are sometimes black and people get them confused with Red Bellied Black snakes.
If the snake had a big head, thick body, yellowish belly and showed agression for no apparent reason then my guess is you encountered a Tiger snake.
I had one at home try to chew the front tyre off my bike years ago.
Just my thoughts mate. Google tiger snakes and see if they look like your mate out the back.
August 14, 2010 at 12:36 pm #185929Mal has a good point there Eags, some tigers do resemble Black fellas, and it is highly unusual for a red-belly to flatten his head, this is more tiger or taipan aggression style.
reminds me of the line Peter Garret sang
“yellow belly black snake sleeping on a red rock, waiting for the stranger to go”
August 14, 2010 at 9:49 pm #185931Yes good warning there eags, imagine my suprise when I pulled up next to this lot,

 I wasn`t hangin` round to ask him, being out there alone & noone was at home either if I had got bitten
He seemed happy enough when I stopped & rolled back a bit,,,,
It was on the uphill of a very swampy bit of a gully, so there would be heaps of food about for him I suppose :S -
