Just spoke to Roh43. He and i are heading up from Geelong, Vic, tommorrow but as he was changing his oil he snapped a bolt off in the oil seal cover. He drilled it out and put an easy out in but managed to snap that off flush with the bike. Its a KTM 250 if that helps. Is there a way to get it out or is it best to take it to a shop ?

Damn, That doesn`t sound too good Jak,,,
Easyouts are hardened like spiral taps and a bastard to try & drill out I think
Normally you can shater a broken tap with a hammer & punch, but risky at best in an engine case like that :pinch:So I am really no help at all , sorry
May 30, 2012 at 12:07 am #223013Far out what a bummer!! Scary stuff! TB showed me that you can shatter a snapped off easy out, with a centre punch if you are careful. Once shattered, they come out and you can have another go. That was with a 6mm bolt. In an alloy case be real careful.

Yeah Jak, It can be shattered, but damn you need to be careful !!!!
What size easy out is it ??? I`m guessing 6mm or less :whistle:Don`t want to do any more damage in the attempt of getting it out :pinch:

I’ll tell him not to hit to hard and if in doubt, stop.
May 30, 2012 at 12:19 am #223012If it is possible to get a thin punch onto an edge of the offending easyout, you can tap it with a hammer and loosen its hold onto the bolt. You may need to apply a SMALL amount of heat to the immediate surrounding area of the hole so as the alloy expands to assist you, or if you have any of the aerosole spray that freezes parts to shrink them, apply a liberal amount to the broken easyout and again try and tap it around with the small punch or good quality 4″ nail.
Always use a “T” spanner, the ones that are used for taps (not the water type) and not a shifter or ring/open ended spanner when using easyouts, you get a better “feel” with them and less likely to snap the buggers.
Hope this helps you two out.

You will need a small magnet and a fine tiny screw driver
Good luck if you don’t think you can do it get someone that can before you stuff it completely
