Went to get some new sprockets for the TA yesterday, the current ones are still in good nick but I want to change from the 15/47 I have now to something like 14/48 to better suit the off road stuff. Problem is that my 1997 model wasn’t released in Oz, in fact between 1987 and about 2001 no models were released in Oz which means the local shops have no listings for the bike parts. :(

Tried a 1987 model front but it had a different spline, so I tried the later model one and it was close but the salesgirl took it out the back and had the mechanics measure the 2 (I had my original with me for comparison) and she came back and apparently it won’t fit, they only have listings for 15 tooth fronts anyway and the biggest rear is a 49 which would be better but maybe not quite enough.

Does anyone no of a reputable overseas supplier I can try or I was even considering getting one made by a machine shop somewhere, any thoughts?

Jeffro Honda share a lot of hubs and counter shaft spline sizes so I would be surprised that something in the range wouldn’t fit.

Would you be able to photocopy an actual picture of your front sprocket and e mail it to me, I will find you a 14 front guaranteed, I have next week of and have some running around to do sort no problem at all. I will then throw it in a mail bag for you. For a fellow Honda pilot this wont be a problem, welcome to the smart side :)

I know that rear blanks are available to have the centres machined.

All you are really after is a 14 front I am sure something in the Honda range will fit.

Jeffro I cant find the old front sprocket from my NX (the one when I got the bike) and I have since modified it to run XR650 front sprockets since. If you order / purchase a front sprocket for a 1990 model Honda NX650 Dominator I am nearly 100% it will be the right sprocket from all the research I have done. I also think you could modify a XR650 sprocket to fit as I have done but would go with getting a NX sprocket first. Hope this helps

I bought one for my 87 TA and it was the wrong spline. My TA had a very square spline with like 5mm flats the sprocket I got may fit your bike as its splines are alot closer like an XR650 it’s a supersprox and states its for a TA. If you want PM me your address and I’ll mail it to you and you can see if its right or not.

The other thing to be careful of it was a common modification to converte TA’s from 525 to 530 chain and sprockets.

We tried the 87 model and the later ones and they 87 is like you said with the bigger notches and the later one was very close. As for the chain, yeah that’s another concern, I am not sure what size is on it. Do you know any measurements that I can check to see what size it is?

Just looking on Chain Gang website and they have a list for my bike & model. Still only have 15 front and 48 rear as the best option for offroad. Will have to see if the NX 14 tooth will fit, if not it’s not that big of a deal, it still goes well off road. I think I am just trying to ride it like an enduro or motocrosser.

Just realised that the NX probably runs a 520 chain doesn’t it. That would rule out using one of those sprockets I would think.

520, 525 and 530 are all the same pitch just the width of the chain varies.

Whilst on a trip on my TA I was forced to run a 520 front sprocket with a 530 chain for over 5000km’s to get home worked but not ideal.
