When I hit the sack Friday night, it was flogging down rain and I was having reservations about riding in the morning. I woke at 5am to a clear sky, ”ripper” I thought to myself, “should be sweet”. A quick feed and kit up and I was at Tripper’s by 6.45am. He fired his XR up and we were off to our 7am meeting with Osmooian and his KLX400. A few intros and we got straight into it and headed west, bound for Comboyne. Once we got going, it became obvious that we had a fair bit of rain overnight and all the puddles and bog holes were full.

We went up onto Bago and had a crack at some singles on top, in no time at all, we were soaked to the core from the wet bushes, that whacked you with regular monotony. Every log had somehow been placed at 45 degrees on the trail and that kept you on your toes in what was, already a testing trail.

We headed down off Bago again, via Big Jurassic and over the log at the bottom, as it was so slippery you couldn’t get enough drive to have a good crack at the log and I was the first to have a go and was also the first to get stuck after the pig cased out.

With a little helping push the pig was up and over, then Osmooian had a crack at it and also cased out. A bit of revving and spinning and he was over no dramas.

Tripper was the last to hit it and like always, hit it like a bull at a gate and was up and over no worries. Untill he got on the other side and things went pear shaped for him.

From there we went into little Jurassic for a bit of real tight rainforest single, it amazes me how little evidence there was, of 100 bikes passing through there last weekend. Once out of little Jurassic we pulled up for a rest as we had been cracking along at a fair pace all morning.
Tripper had been putting in and looked a bit hot, check out the steam coming off the boy!!

gotta love the rainforest sections on wet day

After a quick stop we headed up onto the range via Link Trail. Then down “the hill” from Loop one of the Poker run, from there we rode the poker run trail in the opposite direction and went up the hill we went down last Saturday, if that makes sense. It was near the top of that hill that Tripper throws the XR away again, no damage and he eventually got the XR started and met us at the top.

Some Lantana trails were next, then a quick dash up the main trail to Zinc road singles and on towards Comboyne rock. The run up under the rock, uphill over several perfectly formed erosion mounds is always a hoot and today was no exception. We arrived at the top of the rock and the view was absolutely awesome.

Under the rock is a bit of a cave that I showed to Osooian

We started to head back via Elkhorn trail and I had a bit of a moment when we were punching along fairly quick and I came across a tree across the trail, a few desperate moments saw me wash a heap of speed off, just before I went off the trail and into the Lantana. No come off and all was good, scratched through the head of the tree and was under way again.

As we were running ahead of time I decided to lead the boys out to Rock Knob and do a few singles over there that see no traffic at all. I was belting along when I noticed the trail I was looking for, flash by, so I hit the anchors and slid off the trail into a greasy log and I was off and tumbling. Gave the crook shoulder a bit of a work out but otherwise OK. We did some overgrown trails that I am trying to keep open, in the process we got soaked again as the bush stayed wet all morning.

We headed down another overgrown trail and about 10 meters from the end I hit another log in the long grass and was off and tumbling again, this time coming down on my other shoulder. It was a fair come off and the front end of the pig got a fair twist in her and we had to straighten here out. The XR faired better than my mobile phone though, which was in my Camelbak and somehow got a cracked screen.

From there we did a bit more of loop 2 from the poker run and then onto, fence trail, and into Huntington, were Osmooian had his one and only step off for the day, after becoming victim of the greasy log across the trail. When you are in Huntington, you can’t go past a run into Rutzilla. which was deeper, greasier and uglier than I have ever seen it. From there it was a quick run along the main trail back to Wauchope Cemetery. We did 90km of mostly single trail and were back by 11.30 am, an excellent early morning run that was worth the effort and the sore spots.

All formed roads and old logging trails, so no worries as far as I am concerned. ;)

It is well and good to have all the trails, the trick is to get them to all link up and that only comes with a ton of “bush time”.
