Looking for any advice on steering dampers.
Any one got one of the new Msc dampers?
Do they take much physical effort off riding over a day?
Is it really an issue to top mount them? Crash wise ? If you don’t want raise the bars that much with the under mount kits.
ThanxApril 23, 2013 at 8:31 am #240252I have found my MSC makes a huge difference oer a big 2 Day ride,,,
Helps on those little things that try and catch you out as you tire & fade or lose concentrationMine is an older MSC rebadged as a Rallemoto.
A lot has been written on here before from guys that rate them as well as some that think they are a gimmick :whistle:see here for one of the threads from a while back

Gets a good rap there too. But i can see why you went the way you did thats a good price you got there.
Got a few more questions for someone using the MSC matrix though,If you have say a 3 setting for return to centre does that mean youve got to push it hard for a direction change?
cheers
April 23, 2013 at 8:22 pm #240289Two banger if you want to take a drive up the hill on the weekend or tomorrow arvo I can put my bike up on a stand and demonstrate / explain / answer your questions if you want? That way you can see it as well

April 23, 2013 at 9:16 pm #240254Hey Twobanger,
I had run steering dampers previously but didn’t on my recent TE310 for fear of it losing its very nimble feel. Must have been a phase :dry:The 310 used to wear me out especially over a 2 day ride, by the end I would be stuffed!!
I recently fitted a MSC Matrix to my KTM 350 and then done the Kowen forrest ride.
2 loops totaling 130K mostly tight single track and when finished after 2 days I wouldn’t say I was fresh as a daisy, but I certainly could tell the difference from doing the same ride the previous year.I was running it on 3 on the main and 2 on the return as recommended by MSC for tight slow work and its was fine. I did turn the main up to 4 at one stage just to try it but put it back at the next stop as I found I did have to try a bit harder to get it to turn in the tight stuff.
So it’s only 1 ride old but now I remember why I used dampers previously and it also got me wondering why I didnt put one on the 310……..
April 24, 2013 at 8:33 am #240255Thanks TB ill take you up on that offer hows sat after lunch gotta go to the netball in the morning, no i’m not playing. Can you pm me your number and ill give you a shout sat.
Good review trailrider,i’m thinking just smooth things out a touch will be great. I can’t see myself riding along and making changes on the fly though.
Did you top mount it or low mount it Trailrider? , ive got small spacers in mine already i think i’m close to the undermount bar height already. Not sure on a massive bar height though.
cheers

You can go under mount and then fit a low rise bar and end up with a similar stance. Before you make any changes measure your bar to axle length so that you have reference point.

Are they worth the money —YES
Will they help my riding —-YES
If you have never ridin with out a damper then you will never know the benifits but once you have had one you will never go with out.
They are so good these days in that they are so adjustable they work weather your doing 180 in the desert or carving tight single trail.
If you turn up to an Australian off road round you will see quite a few of the top riders using them.
I will never ride without one again.
The MSC matrix is an awesome damper a few of my frinds run them and love em.
April 25, 2013 at 7:37 am #240257Thanks Joe 350 i’m pretty much sold on the idea, gotta pay a massive power bill first though
April 29, 2013 at 2:33 am #240258Hi twobanger,
I used the low mount, its right out of the way you dont even know its there.
I had the bars raised anyway, I like them high as it encourages you to stand up more and I hardly noticed the difference.
Two rides with the damper now and I am totally convinced I shoulda put one on the 310 as well.Loving it!
I rode with a mate last weekend (4 days) who is a better rider than me and he has been textin me today sayin he is sore.
I am good to go again
April 29, 2013 at 1:10 pm #240259That’s a good idea STM ill get the tape out and measure things up. Was watching a Scott’s damper clip, they claim other dampers that use a different wiper or fin to damp get damaged in a stack.
Is this b.s ? I’m thinking 150k in the desert anything would break including rider.
I think what they are saying is their design is different.May 11, 2013 at 3:35 am #240260After all the positive damper feedback went with the MSC Matrix undermount kit for the Husky.
Mounting the Post
Under mount kit includes a full set of new risers and bar clamps.
MSC quote a 25mm increase over standard,i got an increase of 15mm after removing the small risers that i had.
All done, and hardly sticks out at all, just have to do some mods to the bar pad.
Install was easy, and it feels good to buy an Aussie made product after speaking with MSC a few times on the phone they were great to deal with.

Great bit of kit, as you said “Aussie made” and at times it will save you without you even knowing it
