No idea on dampers, I’ve not used one. But is it “dampner” or “damper”? Always thought it was meant to be “damper”…

Google seems to think I am right, but that’s nothing to write home about! (Dear Mum, today I found out…)

I thought dampener – because you are dampening something not damping something ??

    Wiki:
A steering damper, steering stabiliser or sprint damper is a damping device designed to inhibit an undesirable, uncontrolled movement or oscillation of a vehicle steering mechanism (a phenomenon known in the motorcycling community as ‘wobble’, or in extreme cases, a ‘tank-slapper’). Modern motorbikes are unlikely to exhibit this behaviour in daily use thanks in part to better dampers and due to their very stiff front ends and other general improvements in design and tyre technology.

Not that wiki is always right by any means, but no mention of the word “dampener” there at all. :)

(For those not in the know, this is an old argument that never fails to bring out a biter…)

Don’t worry, I’ll start a thread about chain lube next!! :P

Can’t believe not one bite to my head-stem bearing comment though… you lot are slipping! B)

    CHOMP

Dampening as you are probably aware of I actually got NP on this one…Survey the results for “dampen” and you will see it sits inside the boundaries of that which you speak.

an example that you can locate without a GPS

    My Take is
    Dampner = no such word

Damper = made with flour, and you eat it

So it has to be Dampener

Thats my story and I’m sticking to it   ;)

Yep let your son wash his bike with a pressure washer enough times and the head stem will fill with water and in no time the bearings will sieze up and whollah!! Instant home made steering dampener (going with Hatto’s version)

Don’t know about other brands as I have a Scotts/Ohlins.

The more you wind it up to stiffen, the less it will dampen when you hit something.

So stiff is for high speed, desert, sand etc

Somewhere in the middle I’m happy

Minimal damping is backed off, This will absorb the big deflections, no good for higher speeds & stability

Then there is the base v/v that you don’t touch.

Also has settings for degrees away from centre damping with no return damping on the off road model

After all that talk of spelling it’s good to get down to how to use the errr? Steering thing!
Thanks for that info sb, I’m riding with STM this weekend so it will best fast and tight so I’m guessing start of mid soft?

Nick, I have a Roc Stomper on my 300 Gasser, In the really tight singles I either back it right off ie fully counter clock wise or just bump it off. If you are riding in Goolies and or sand about midway is the go and if the speed picks up and you have a lot of twin trail etc go up to max setting. you will soon work it out what is best for you ;) Because I have a Gumby hand I really do need it helps no end, my brother is exactly the same on his RMX stopped him from crashing heaps, and he has regained a lot of his speed that he lost after his surgery. They are definateley a good thing in my case anyway. B)

Thanks for that advice Ollie I injuered my hand riding last year and on long rides it plays up. Sounds like the roc stomper could be a better investment than I thought!

Nah they all work the same Nick its just that they have different features more so then anything I am sure you will like the one you have. I have used (for more then a day) or owned a WER, Roc Stompa, Scott and the current MSC. I would own by choice either a MSC or Scott there was a couple of things I didnt like about the Roc and the WER I think has its limits

After riding with the dampener last weekend i was really cautious of putting it on as when did I felt like I was’ off balance in a rut’ and fighting the thing.
Is this commen and do you get used to it?

Sounds as though you have it adjusted to tight, maybe start on a easier setting and work your way up if you need later
