AnonymousI am not actually organising this but am more after an expression of interest for some time in the future.
I got myself a sand paddle tyre a fair while ago, thinking that maybe one day I could tag along with a couple of riders and follow their lead.
I have watched a couple of the early Crusty Demons videos where they jump over the huge sand dunes. I picked up a few tips on how to do it and wouldn’t mind having a go at a 200 foot jump. After all, if you crash , it is only on sand and that is pretty soft stuff to land in….isn’t it?
Have any of you ridden on Stockton Beach (Newcastle) or are possibly interested in doing a trip there one day. Maybe it could even be a combined 4wd and fishing for jewies trip with an overnight stay.
I may even be able to borrow a sand paddle for someone else as long as they fitted and removed it themselves. Not sure if the guy still has it.
I’ll see if there is any interest first, before going down that track and asking for a favour. If he still has it, he may even sell it cheaply.

AnonymousDon’t get too excited yet. I have a couple of issues at present that need addressing which prevent me from doing the things I would like to do. Like I said earlier, it may be a while before I can do anything. Feel free to do it without me if you guys are in a rush to get up there. I wouldn’t be offended.
To be honest, I am mainly interested in the bike riding side.
Here is a link regarding permits etc.

September 7, 2008 at 1:22 pm #107799Sounds like a good idea, what about late january or maybe be too hot. What if you don’t have a paddle wheel.
Or whats a paddle wheel worth, I have seen them but don’t know to much about them.Chris.
September 7, 2008 at 1:24 pm #107919Hey Tiny, is there any ride you WON’T do!!

AnonymousChris,
Paddle tyres are a specialist tyre for sand only. They can’t be used on other terrain as due to the nature of their design, they will get destroyed. See a pic of one in action here:
http://www.trailbikerallys.com.au/tests%20info/STORYS/stockton/stockton.htmAs far as costs go, they are about $180-$200 brand new. I got mine on ebay for $75 and it had only been used once. I still haven’t used it
Keep an eye on the “for sale” section as there might be a cheap sand paddle up for sale soon. I acquired another one on the weekend in a bit of a contra deal I did with a guy down the road who had one he wanted to get rid of his.
You could probably get away with using a specific sand/mud tyre instead of a paddle tyre. I even reckon a trials tyre would work as well, as long as the pressures were set correctly.
There is a couple of trick regarding riding in the sand as far as bike prep and riding technique are concerned. I’ll leave that for another separate post one day.
