This is a bit of a worry being my home town. A story from todays paper.
More than 60 trial bikes stolen in Geelong
MOTORBIKE thieves are running rampant through Geelong, with more than 60 trail bikes reported stolen from homes in recent months.
Geelong Police Senior Constable Craig McDonald said thieves had been targeting trail bikes stored in home garages all over the region.
“They’re not targeting any particular streets or suburbs we’re seeing this all over Geelong,” he said.
“It looks like (thieves) have gone driving past houses during the day on weekends, looking out for people they can see have got bikes in garages. Then they’ve come back at night while the owners are asleep, forced their way into the garage and rode off with the bike. They’re certainly doing their homework.”
He said thieves would often quietly wheel the small motorbikes out of garages and down the road before starting them and riding away. Sen-Constable McDonald, himself a bike-rider, said he was alarmed by the high rate of thefts of the bikes, worth more than $5000 each.
“It’s unbelievable over the last six months we’ve just been slammed, it’s pretty disappointing,” he said.
* Remove one of the bike’s wheels and store it elsewhere.
Anyone with information on bike theft should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at http://www.crime stoppers.com.au
What are peoples views on attempting to stop this from happening to me.

So according to that, there is no need to worry JAK, more chance of getting raped than having your bike pinched.
December 17, 2010 at 12:23 am #192834That’s true but either way you would feel like youve been screwed!
On a serious note i have a kryptonite chain and lock with the anchor bolted into concrete + comprehensive insurance.
Rebore
December 17, 2010 at 1:37 am #192836There is not really anything you can do to stop them as if they really want it they will get it but you can make it harder for them. Good chain and lock through the frame (not just a wheel) and onto something solid like plates bolted to the floor. Keep it out of sight as much as possible, wash it out the back not near the road that sort of thing. I have an alarm on the garage with the blue flashing light in a prominent position to discourage the bastards, but if they really want it they will find a way so the best thing is to have insurance, I only have thrd party, fire and theft insurance for mine which isn’t too expensive and does give some piece of mind.
We had a similar spree here in Newcastle (bike thefts not rapes)in the past year or so, cops made a major break through not so long back with quite a few arrests.December 17, 2010 at 1:53 am #192807For those that do use expensive chains and bolt down systems or other ways to secure your bike make sure you don’t leave anything lying around your shed that can be used to cut them. I did a job a few months back were a CRF450R had been chained down and bolted to the floor using a Kryptonite system. Problem was the owner left the Oxy acetylene setup next to the bike. Seems the C#NT who took the bike knows how to fire up an oxy cutter.
December 17, 2010 at 3:17 am #192808A mate got his 530 pinched in that one in Newcastle that Jeffro mentioned. The cops let him know that they have it but he has’nt got it back yet cause the theives stuffed up the engine numbers and the pipe was’nt on it. So the coppers havta hang on to it until it is positively identified and all sorted out.

Won’t help in prevention but will if recovered..
There is also some cool spy tech that is working its way into the hands of joe-blow consumers.. Mini GPS trackers.. hmmmm….
December 17, 2010 at 4:28 am #192840club lock threw back wheel into two right angle pieces of steel its tricky to get the key in,so it would be hard to pick it plus chains plus alarm Also stickers on your car are a dead giveaway

I rode the poker run and there was a brand new looking DRZ parked in the bush all day and no-one stole it, so the proofs in the pudding.
