Just before the Cameron’s trip I fitted a new front tyre. While I was fitting it the phone rang (how surprising those that know me say) well I continued fitting the tyre and then wheel and talking on the phone (shouldn’t do that especially when playing with brakes, wheels and stuff)
Now on the Tenere the brake calipers have to be removed when the wheel is taken on and off. So I throw it all back together while on the phone  Pump the brakes up, grab a helmet and tear down the road to Penrith, I had to go to the printers, Tee N Cee and Sutto’s for various reasons. Then while ripping home I think I will take a run through the national park will be good shouldn’t because tea will be ready but hey there is always time.
Coming back through the park on the bitumen I come up to a hairpin right hander and brake (late as well) the lever comes straight back to the bars NO FARKIN BRAKES, the rear works and I was lucky enough to miss the guard rail and go into the timber, miss everything big and stay upright.
Talk about shit one’s self   Inspection showed the lower bolt in the right side caliper had fallen out and the top one was loose letting the caliper swing away from the disc.
Why, well I hadn’t tightened the bolts had I  Could have been real nasty. Lesson for me well they are lessons I know and teach.
Haste makes waste
Never time to do it right, but always time to do it over
Focus on the job at hand
Ignore the bloody phone
Plus many more
I thought I would share this because mistakes are easily made no matter how much experience we have and rechecking your work takes no real time. I teach the apprentices to double check their own work and I didnt because I was rushing to get stuff done.

November 25, 2010 at 12:31 am #191388Lucky result in the end and a good lesson. I like doing my own maintenance but there is always that nagging doubt in the back of my mind that I have forgotten something as I don’t do it enough to have proper systems engrained in my pshcye. All well that ends well as long as it doesn’t happen twice.
