    Hi All,
I’m wondering if anyone has had any success changing the suspension on an old 1979 or 80 model
    Honda XL250s..?
I’ve seen some dessert racer bikes from back in the era that had a different front end running a 21inch front wheel instead of the stock 23inch and different springs on the back..
I’m wondering if anyone out there knows of another Honda model front end (XR or CR) from the era that
would be a relatively easy swap.
That either uses the same diameter shocks so i can use the stock triple clamps or an entine front end that uses the same size steering head?
and also if there is another model’s rear shocks that would bolt on? or somewhere that could supply an after market shock.
I’m hoping someone has had some experience with old XL’s or knows what was the go back in the day..
I’d like to keep her as representative of the technology and trends of the era but hopfully improve the suspension to make it a little more suitable for (very) ameture vintage enduro.
    Cheers..

Mate go to the Tekniks suspension forum and ask Evil Rudy the above question, actually I will move it there and we can see what Rudy has to say.

    Okey Dokey,

I’d look around for a 21 front wheel with the right axle size and if you get the backing plate and front cable you’d only need to make some spacers. Ditch the 23″ wheel – it was an answer to a question NO-ONE should have ever asked.

Otherwise, you’re on the right track as far as sourcing a complete front end with the same size fork tubes – it will slide right in. Try A.R. Maxwells. They are a wrecker in VIC that I’ve bought a lot of stuff for and they seem to not be complete wankers – tongue in cheek (actually they have a great knowledge base and are cool to deal with).

Rear shock are super long and the only thing we’ve been able to source is Hagon double spring shocks that are that long. Sold a pair for an XL500 this week. Retail at $350. You will not set the world on fire with them, but then again what can you do with a 150kg 14hp trail bike… you have the power to weight ratio of a ride on mower with gear advantage.

HOWEVER… check these guys out because they make fire breathing 2 valve Honda motors…www.powroll.com – how about a bored and stroked 340 running 13:1. Ahhh the smell of av-gas in the air… They also have a healthy index of like minded lovers of old two valve Honda and such and list them on the appropriate page.

    Happy hunting,
    Rudy
