20-22/11/09, Is anyone going?
Show detailsNovember 20, 2009 at 5:44 am #161255Well I just got home from the Sydney Motorcycle Show and now I’m all depressed. So many great bikes that I have no hope of fitting in my riding budget. Still it’s good fun to wander around, bullshit the salesman and generally dream.
The $18 entry fee is pretty reasonable seeing you get a few shows thrown in for your money but $16 for parking was a down right rip-off. Tip for those planning to go, ride ya bike there if ya can. Free parking for bikes right out front.
There were all the big bike brands there, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Harley, BMW, KTM, Husqvana as well as smaller boutique brands such as Husaberg, Sherco, Victory, and the like. There was even some cheap Chinese brands.
I spent a bit of time at the BMW stand, the new 450 looks flash but I don’t think there are many changes.
I’ve seen these in magazines and a few on the road but they are even more impressive up close. Of all the bikes at the show, this is the one I would have taken home.
Got to see the new YZF450 up close. Very interesting design but at a cost. According to the salesmen the 2010 model is $1000 more than the 2009. If this extra cost transfers to the WR in the future it going to make very pricy.
The new Tenere is a bike I wanted to be impresses by as I can see an adventure bike in my future. I have followed the bikes release and even like the new styling but up close it just looked cheep and fragile. The headlight and speedo assembly look very venerable. There is a metal frame that supports it all but I don’t think this will help much. This is also the first bike I’ve seen with a tow hook at the front. Almost like Yamaha are expecting it to break down. All that and a wet weight 2kg heavier than the BMW F800GS.
There were some Moto GP bike there to go ooh ahh over.
And some fully sic motards, I particularly liked the Husky 610.
But the Ducati Hypermotard would be hell fun to ride and looks horn.
The Honda stand had all the usual models and a line up of their past 3 Safari winners
Jacob Smiths 2009 bike.
There are four great rides in this photo.
There was also freestyle and trails displays.
For some reason I enjoyed watching the little CRF’s the most
And with all the arguing over 2T vs 4T could this be our real future.
There was also plenty of non two wheeled eye candy.
There was also a show and shine with a few choppers and the like as well as many other trade displays. All in all a good day out and well worth the look if ya get a chance over the weekend.
November 20, 2009 at 10:01 am #162064tow hook is old KTM technology,, and does the denim short come with all new bikes.
November 20, 2009 at 12:22 pm #162070Funny thing is Boony I think the tow hook is a good idea. It just seems like Yamaha don’t have alot of faith in the bike making the distance. As for the denim shorts. You couldn’t afford that bike, no doubt very high matainance.
November 20, 2009 at 5:43 pm #161256Good report Scotty,
hows the electric bikes rear sprocket gotta be 60+ teeth there and its got a nose instead of a headlight, fugly.
Interesting your comment on the tennere i saw it at penrith dealer and thought it looked budget for the price tag.November 20, 2009 at 7:37 pm #162105
Anonymousracy and i may head down. i was looking forward to racing the thumpstar, but running in a new motor on a sandy track in 39 degree heat is not a good idea.
if we do head down. i think deus ex machina is having a swap meet and bike show today. there will be some awesome bikes there too.
November 20, 2009 at 10:00 pm #162106Great report Scotty.
The G450X is just the 09 model with a sticker kit, I am pretty sure the new model has not landed here and wont appear until they sell all the 09s first.
Dont think I’d like to throw that Ducati around an SM track, looks like it is aimed at the road market because the suspension doesn’t look the goods for a dirt track.
I see in my future a BMW G650X Challenge, kind of a dual sport, were there any at the show?

The only one I saw at the show was one of the small trade dispays. They were selling saddle/tank bags and the like. They had a G650X all kitted out with bags and gear. Looked like it had seen some work too.
November 20, 2009 at 11:04 pm #162126Thought so Scotty, they haven’t been making them since the 450 came out.
Not that it’s discontinued, they give themselves the option of another production run if and when they see fit or if there is demand :S
Hopefully the next lot of 650s will be better than ever, maybe even better than a Honda :woohoo:Was there heaps of eyecandy at the show or did you really go to see the bikes?
November 20, 2009 at 11:07 pm #162065Hey Dan take note of the Braces!! We are trend setters on OB, maybe we should get some made with our logo for next years show. But who could we get to model them??
November 20, 2009 at 11:15 pm #162129Also making its first appearance in front of a local audience is BMW Motorrad’s F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer edition, featuring a number of competition-spec upgrades to celebrate the stunt rider’s success.
BMW Motorsport paintwork is detailed on the bodywork, wheels, rear shock spring and pillion seat cover and an Akrapovic sports muffler adds a sporty sound to the motorcycle’s dynamic look.
The production version will be revealed to Sydney showgoers this week and will be available by special order only, with delivery slated for April 2010.
This looks like the stocker (?)

This was the F800GS not the R. The R was at the other end of the display with all the other more road oriented bikes.
November 20, 2009 at 11:20 pm #162132Oops, this bike has GS written on it.
November 21, 2009 at 8:22 pm #162133Note: this is really champo using racy’s login. Mine is broke
Hia scotty.
After seeing your pics, and it being too hot to race, racy tacy and I decided to head down and check it out ourselves. We had never been to a bike expo before. We thought we would only spend couple of hours there. It entertained and informed us for many more than that. Here’s a couple more pics to compliment yours. We saw a lot of things including your brother tiny.
We stopped at a servo for a rest and hung out at this shady spot. Racy saw the ice block sign and asked to have one. She always gets ice blocks and ice creams if she is good.
These 2 backpackers know what to do at a hot servo.
This stoner must be pretty good to ride a bike like this
but for some reason the bike makes me want to die slowly but early. must be the colour combo and little white dashes painted on itIt must go fast
And stop quick
These leco bikes are so light. And powerful. They will have to get past the proto type ice cream bucket look
Racy and I took the opportunity to get ear moulds made. They cut out 40 db of background noise but you can hear your friends talk as normal.
moto should get himself one of these
Tha bomb
Yamaha always seems to be able to make motors that look ugly. They need to put an engineer with a talent in aesthetics in their team
This would be fun. And scary
We would need our earmoulds in if they started this baby up
champo

What do you reckon we get cracking on the 2010 OBT brace range.
The YZF450 looks the poo. When will they bring it over onto the WR?
Fuel Injection is the go – it will be happy days when the WR450 gets FI
