Cutting a long story short.
A mate of mine recently sold an XR600 to a young English back packer, who envisioned riding it around Australia while on a working holiday. Not far out of Armidale, a rear wheel bearing gave out and destroyed the hub.
The young fella is now stuck in Armidale, where the local bike shop quoted him , $1300 to fix it !!!!
That is freaking rogue pricing! They told him he needs a whole new back wheel!!
Anyhow, my mate put him in contact with me and I have sourced him a new 2nd hand wheel for $400. So he is trying to limp the XR the 217km to Wauchope today with the buggered back hub.
It will be interesting to see if he makes it or if we have to do some sort of rescue mission up the Oxley.
October 17, 2011 at 12:01 pm #210516Mick I am not supporting the bikeshop in question but if they were to purchase a new genuine hub and the spokes were seized as I imagine a bike that vintage would be they would need replacing. Then add bearings and labour it would be around that. They should have tried 2nd hand for sure, maybe they did and don’t have your number  Good on you for helping ol mate out

October 17, 2011 at 12:08 pm #210527My first thought was, seeing as though he was in Armidale and Tamworth is closer, I was gunna give him Boony’s number and it could have been his problem……..LOL
You are probably right in what you say TB, not everyone will re-spoke a wheel for a Carton of rum!
October 17, 2011 at 3:54 pm #210528Gotta love XR’s, Chris the pom has just rolled into town after nursing the XR600 the 217km’s from Armidale. A quick look at the hub and the way the wheel wobbles extravegantly from side to side, would suggest that the hub is indeed stuffed! I will pull it apart for him this afternoon and make a decision whether we can repair it or we put the spare wheel we have here on it, so he can contuniue his Aussie adventure with still some of his cash intact.

Mick you pnut I am currently travelling from tamworth to armidale daily for work. I would have bought it back here and we could have got the wheel transported her, fixed in my shed and bobs yah uncle
October 17, 2011 at 11:04 pm #210547After a bit of dicking around I eventually got a XR600 wheel that my brother was willing to sell. After some more dicking around, with a bastard sprocket bolt, we got the wheel changed over eventually. I offered him a bed but he declined and was off on his way to the youth hostel in Port Macquarie with an extra 2nd hand tyre from under the house strapped to his kit and an OBT sticker sitting proudly above his head light. I gave him one of his fellow countrymen’s number from up the coast (he is an Adventure cyclist himself) , just in case he runs into more strife. So Nickj you may get a call.
I have some pics that I will upload later.
October 17, 2011 at 11:08 pm #210553Old bulls spirit lives on.
