Check the OBT definitions handbook……..section 2 paragraph 4 ‘…………a get-off is only classified as a “Crash” when the said rider and bike are moving forward in the same direction! Clearly, a poofy little half roll back down a hill can not be called a Crash. Especially when a simple “Starfish” maneuver would have prevented the roll.

What’s Corey going on about someone wooosing it home on the blacktop because he was sore? I didn’t hear about that!

Not letting all the facts get in the way of your rant there Crash are you. I wouldn’t have ridden any more bitumen them then getting home actually. Also as the King will testify I am sure I actually ended up in the worst swamp trying to avoid a small 2 km section of the dreaded black top. If you ever came riding you would have the facts :laugh:

Yes I did take an easier route then the others, was I busted well yeah as STM saw when we left the pub two kids on push bikes were doing the wheelie thing asking for a wheelie and I didn’t do a wheelie for them, ever seen me not wheelie for kids ? No I was busted

Sunday 14th August

When TB called to let me know he was planning a North Coast trip I was keen to get him out and show him some of the new trails I have found since the OBT Coffs ride last November. Judging by the phone call and pm I received on Friday night it sounded like Mick’s shed party was in full swing so I was pretty certain by the time he got to my place on Saturday afternoon he would be feeling a bit beaten up and ready for a relatively quiet night. When he arrived he looked like a cast member from the ‘Hangover’ and it seems the Bundy had taken its toll on him. As we unloaded his bikes my little boy, Jesse, was like a dog with two dicks as TB had not only his BRP and Tenere but also a Peewee50 he had driven up for Dupsyam4. Of course Jesse thought it was for him! We had a good feed of Lamb Shanks, a few quiet ones and turned in early in preparation for the next day.

Sunday morning dawned clear and cool and it looked like a perfect day for riding. We met Corey8 and Tdriver at the local servo and as we geared up it was clear everyone was excited for the ride as the heckling came thick and fast. Whenever TB and Corey get together it is always a recipe for a fast ride and with Tdriver sweeping it was just the four of us. We were going to cover a lot of ground and as soon as the bikes fired up and hit the dirt the pace was on.

Over the course of the next 5 hours each us was destined to crash and I got mine out of my system very early. We were less than 5 mins into it when I hung my front wheel up on the edge of a bog hole and went down. My landing could not have been softer but it could have been drier! The water in this bog hole is stagnant and stinks and I managed to fall right into it. I got up as quick as I could and shook myself off whilst looking to see who had witnessed it. I was hoping it was not TB as I would never live it down and I turned to see it was Corey behind me and he was pissing himself laughing. I really can’t blame him as if the shoe was on the other foot I would have had a good laugh too. Unfortunately the shoe (boot) that was on my foot was full of swamp water as were my jersey pants and gloves!
I jumped back on my bike and pinned it. I knew with TB and Corey on my tail and Tdriver sweeping I would not have to spend much time dropping cornermen so I charged into some sweet flowing singles.

I linked four different sections together before I stopped for our first regroup and it was not long until we were all back together. It had been a quick start to the morning and everyone was keen to shake the hands out and take a breather. From here we headed for a steep clay downhill when I was stopped by another bike sitting off to the side of the trail. It was Boris from Detour with a group from Sydney so we waited and chatted while his group climbed the hill we were about to descend. In all the time I have been riding out here I have never come across an organised ride group so I asked which way they were headed and as soon as their sweep arrived we headed off.
The forestry guys have been busy working the next corner of the forest we rode to and this resulted in us having to make 3 U Turns and then a fire road transport section to get away from the plot they had been working on. By November I will have found ways around all the timber they have knocked down and left but that is for another day. We had plenty of great trails ahead so there was no point getting caught up in a log jam. We ripped down some fire road and turned down into a sweet piece of single called Tunnel Ball. We ride this trail in either direction but in the downhill direction it is one of Corey’s favourite trails so I motioned to him to lead at the top and he was gone. He was riding well and was soon out of view. When we regrouped at the bottom TB asked if we were going to the Widow Maker and I told him we would after lunch. He said he wanted to ride it now which meant we would have to go up Two Step to get to it. I asked if Corey and Tdriver were happy to ride Two Step as it can be a bigger challenge than the Widow Maker. One by one we made our way to the top until it was Tdriver’s turn. He got to the last ledge when he ran out of momentum and tumbled back below his bike. His leg was jammed under the bike and Corey and I quickly jumped down and dragged it off him. Together we got it to the top and then it was just a short run to the base of the Widow Maker.

TB was keen for me to follow him up and film it on the Go Pro but I was not sure it sounded like such a good idea. There is no point arguing with the Big Fella so I hit record and jumped in behind him. He took off at mach speed up the main face and looked like he had it in the bag until the final set of rock ledges. His bike spun across the ledge and there was nowhere for him to go but down. When he hit the rock he started to roll and almost ended under my front wheel.

Seeing a polka dot jersey rolling down a rock wall is very funny so my instinct was laugh first and help second. As I walking down to help pick TB’s bike up Corey hit the bottom and full tilt but also came to grief this time just above the first face. So there I stood, just me and my ‘mountain bike’ as TB calls it, on top of the Widow Maker whilst two gun riders grovelled below me. Gold!

Corey got to the top, turned around and rode back down so as to give it another go. This time he cleaned it and we headed off. About a km later I heard TB revving his engine and yelling behind me so I pulled over. He said something about having to go back and I thought he meant his day was done. What he was saying was that he needed to go back and ride the Widow Maker again to get the monkey off his back. He had his mind made up so we all turned and followed him back down. He nailed it in second gear which is pretty impressive and it seemed to take away some of the pain he was feeling in the right side of his hip.
We then rode some great sections of fast flowing singles through some beautiful bush. These are the sorts of trails where the bush starts to blur and the eyes start to widen.

Just after this section I came flying round a bend on a fast piece of single and for the second time that day I saw Boris from Detour. This time however we were both doing about 60 and we were on the same line and only came into each other’s view when we were within a short distance of each other. We both moved towards the left side while braking as quickly as we could so that we could warn our groups behind us. As we passed each other we were very close and still moving at a fair clip. Time slowed as our gazes locked but fortunately we both had the sense of mind not to panic or lock our bikes up and we both pulled up safely. Corey was on my back wheel and jumped on the brakes and stopped a short distance behind me. As you can imagine my heart was racing but disaster had been avoided and everyone was ok. We waited for their sweep riders to come through before heading off. They were headed to a different town to us so we knew we would not see each other again that day but it was a timely reminder to be conscious of other riders.
From here the bush then starts to open up into some fast twin singles and old forest roads. This is the natural home of the BRP and TB was having a ball tearing up the open stuff. Big two wheel drifts and long power wheelies with water bars every couple of hundred meters to send you skyward.

Our last section of trail before lunch is a beautifully built piece of single that threads its way through sub tropical forest. TB was keen to show that the BRP was agile enough to deal with the tighter going trails and sat on my back wheel until I got hung up on some rocks and he went on through. This trail seems to go on forever and is a lot of fun.

We dropped into the valley and followed our last section of trail to arrive at the pub for lunch.
We pulled up at the pub and judging by the way TB was moving he was in a fair bit of pain. We chatted over lunch and relaxed for an hour before we geared up and got ready to head back over the range to the coast. It was at this point that TB let me know that he would need to take the main road back. I knew he must be hurting to miss an afternoon’s riding so I gave him the directions and sent him on his way.

It was now just Corey8, Tdriver and I. We headed back up a forest road and straight back into some great trails.

Once we were back up on the ridgeline the sky began to darken and the thunder could be heard rolling in from the west. It had been a great day and we were keen not to get caught out in a thunder storm so we made our way back towards the cars.

Somehow Corey got split up from us but he knows his way around so Tdriver and I made our way back together. When we arrived at the cars Corey was loading up and I said my goodbyes and headed home to catch up with TB where I found him on my couch with his Ipad. We cracked a drink and watched the footage from my Go Pro and had a good laugh. Just as he was getting ready to leave the skies opened and the hail started pounding down. That just gave us a chance for one more drink before the storm passed and I helped load TB’s gear into his Hilux.
It was a great day on the trails and a good chance to show TB some of the new terrain that we will be using next November. I look forward to reading the next instalments of his Northern ride.
