Firstly no pictures, sorry my fault.
The ride was last minute, we thought we would get out for a ride but wasnt sure cause we had stuff to do yesterday and wasnt sure if we would get it all finishedWell we had a great ride today, we didn’t really go anywhere but everywhere in an area. The ride was mostly all single at a brisk pace that we could do day not flat out but brisk, we only really had two stops, we stopped up on top of a ridge over the gap servo area and for fuel and a drink at Freeman’s.
I had a ride on Dan’s WR for a while which I was really surprised with, it is a really nice bike I felt very comfortable on it, would be the most I have enjoyed riding any 450 to be honest, thanks for the ride Dan. Dan had a ride on my bike and I couldn’t believe how much he wheel stood it at speed, it was great seeing my bike in action and being able to listen to Dan talk about it while he rode it. His ride on my bike was shortened by the fact that Dan stalled my bike and failed the man test and couldn’t start it
Moto rode really well considering he looked like death warmed up when he fronted this morning and the amount of time he has had on the bike lately.
It was a great ride, about 75kms out and back in about 3 and a half hrs
Cheers Guys

September 13, 2009 at 4:53 am #152367Sounds like Dan and I share back yards as thats some our local areas too. The ridge before the servo could of been called Razorback, it has a couple of nice rocky downhill steppy bits in it.
Good to see someone had a good ride today
Cheers

AnonymousOn the road to nowhere (in particular) A local from Teralba
We only decided late yesterday afternoon that we were going to go for a ride today, there was a few contributing factors that came into play. Would we have done all that had to be done yesterday? Well we did so we went for a ride.
The day started early cause we wanted to beat the heat that was going to happen today. I was up first to put the dog out for his morning business, then TB was up and we had brekky. My phone started ringing and it was Moto – everyone who heard the phone thought the same thing, Moto was going to bail. But no Moto was ringing to say he was at Glendale and on his way. He stopped on the way to get me a can of Mother so I would be good to go.
Moto arrived and we all geared up to go. Kylie stumbled out into the shed and had a bit of a growl at me for making to much noise. With that out of the road it was time to roll. We headed out over Rhondda Road towards Killingworth, we hit the bush but noticed a bit of smoke over the hill. The wind was heading our way so we decided to keep an eye on it. We headed into some nice tight single which we traversed at a nice healthy pace. Everyone was enjoying the pace and the sweet flowing trails.
We stopped at the top of a hill for about two minutes to enjoy the cool breeze that was blowing across the valley. We could see the smoke and decided to turn around and head away from it. We started to make our way towards Freemans Waterhole for a break and a drink. Moto and me decided to swap bikes for a while on our way to Freemans. This was the first time that I have ridden a Kato and it made me appreciate my bike a whole lot more. The suspension set up that TB done for me on my bike a few rides ago is really good for the riding that I do and handles the trails a whole lot better than when I first bought it. I am not going to diss Moto’s Kato it was just a whole lot different to my bike. The brakes did feel very similar on the Kato to the WR. One thing that I really did like on Moto’s bike is the clutch, nice smooth operation. It did try and hit me in the arse going over one drainage hump – bloody PDS. Moto and I swapped bikes again before we got to Freemans Waterhole – man it was nice to be on my bike again. Not that Moto’s bike has anything wrong with it and I am not dissing Kato’s but I am just used to mine. Everyone please step down from your soapbox. Thanks Moto for giving the chance to ride an Austrian.
We got to Freemans refuelled and had a drink.
When we left I swapped bikes with TB so I could have a go on the Fiddy. After TB gave me a quick tutorial on the starting technique (which I failed dismally) I got it going. The first thing that I noticed how well balanced it is. It didn’t feel as big as you would think. Although that front brake – it is so powerfull. I have got to comment on the suspension as well – it is so plush but never once bottomed, very well set up. We made our way through some nice trails which gave me a chance to check out the power delivery. It is so easy to stand up on the back wheel (which I spend a bit of time on). The power is strong and progressive, unlike the WR which is sometimes all or nothing. We came to a little loop that someone has carved in, I said to TB how about we swap bikes as I knew the track that we were about to do was pretty tight. TB said nah just keep on riding (I think he was secretly enjoying the WR) I came down the first hill and started to come back up and stalled the Fiddy – I don’t know how it’s possible to stall those 650’s giving the amount of torque that they have but I did. Anyway I couldn’t get the bloody thing to start. So TB came down the hill and had a go. I must of put a curse on the bike or something cause it didn’t want to play. After a while it fired into life. I must of really upset it. That was the end of my 650 ride. But in summary if 650’s had an electric leg well I mightn’t be as blue blooded as what I am.
We continued through the track which is some really good stuff. I lost a bolt out of my bark buster which left it hanging off. A quick stop to see if anyone had a bolt to put it back in – no luck – so it was Moto to the rescue with a funky looking spanner thing and I took the rest of my bark buster off. We were off again although I felt a little unbalanced with only one bark buster. We made the call to head towards home. But before that we done some more sweet single trail. Heading along the gas line I had a little off, the front wheel didn’t go where it was suppose to and the bike slide form under me. I told TB and Moto that there was something on the ground that I really wanted to have a look at – they didn’t believe me WTF.
We got headed back along the powerlines towards Killingworth and made our way back to home on the road.
It was a very enjoyable ride today – with no major offs or unpleasantness.
We where home at around 10.00am and me and Moto had a Vitamin B and TB a rum. (It was 12.00pm somewhere)
Thanks to TB for leading us through some nice local tracks and thanks to Moto for the couple of sprints and tussles that we had.
September 13, 2009 at 4:55 am #152376It was the back of razorback mate, good spot

September 13, 2009 at 5:17 am #152368:laugh: I am surprised Moto made it there that early as well.
My money would have been on him bailin` out when the phone rangWell done Steve McQueen :silly:
Nice little report, sounds like a good quick run :woohoo:

AnonymousI don’t know why everyone was expecting me to bail, I have only ever done that on one ride when it was pissing with rain
It was an early start though and I have been known to not like getting up that early. Anyway, after a small over indulgence with the Corona’s and a few Ouzo’s I was feeling a little dusty. None the less we kitted up and got going.
We rode single track and some twin trail for best part of 3 hours non-stop. We held a a good pace and just got on with it, alot like my ride with Murph and Smurph the week before.
There was a lot of dust and being at the back I held off to try and get some clear tarils, this did cause me to lose Dan and TB on a couple of occassions. In trying to play catch up I did have a over the bar crash which resulted in snapped clutch lever, luckily there was enough lever left for me to switch fingers and keep plugging on.
Me and Dan had a ball racing each other up some snotty hills and I later found out that Dan was getting TB to cut me off as they chatting through their Bluetooth comms, cheeky buggers!!!!
On a road section it was wheelie time and TB pulled a cracker getting into top gear on the fiddy, I clocked him and he dropped the front wheel at a smidge over 100Km/h, he even had a woblle in for good effect.
Dan was popping the front wheel all ride and pulled some great looking stand up wheelie’s, how he can pop them up at 80-100Km/h is beyong me!
As Dan mentioned we did swap bikes for a bit and it was good to have a go of a well set up WR. It made my suspension (like most bikes I ride) feel crap and the steering damper makes the front feel so damn sturdy, I’m deffo need to sort that out. I got on with the WR pretty good, brakes were very similar, my gearbox was a bit easier to change gear with although Dan’s bike felt a little snappier.
It was good to test and I can see why the Yammie’s are the choice of many. I still prefer the overall ergo’s of the KTM though….maybe it’s just because it’s what I’m used to.
Considering we were only out for just over 3 hours and the type of terrain we were riding we did cover a few K’s. Great ride, great company….when’s the next one?

AnonymousI’d be up for that Dan, sometime in November though as my parents arrive mid October for a few weeks
September 15, 2009 at 9:22 pm #152574Hey great idea Dan
I’m sure my boy and I will be up for that ride.
Be interesting to see if we can loop more tracks between us, both having a sound local knowledge of the area.
Cheers
