I know I said I did some measurements of Betty, well I just checked (TB thanks for the shots of the motor) and it appears as if I was wrong, I think I can throw two in, so who do I send the cheque to??

We had that email of the big two stroke diesel go round work about a year ago. Amazing stuff. The link below is the starting of one of there smaller units. Still impressive.

We have a 1.5MW diesel generator at work that is used for emergencies. I’ll check the specs on it tonight and post them up. It’s big and loud.

But if you want to talk HP I’ll check what our turbine can put out. The most I’ve seen out of the generator is 720 MW with all steam valves full open and the pressure wound up as much as we dare.

On the flip side of this coin, my brother works for Jabiru who make ultralight aircraft. A while back they were experimenting with a 2 cylinder diesel engine for their planes! Got it built but were not happy with the power to weight ratio as I recall (which may be wrong, it was a couple of years ago now). Anyway, the project was eventually abandoned – but it was interesting, great concept really!

I was at Incheon power station in Korea where they have 1200MW steam turbine (power stations normally utilise several smaller ones). The size of the thing is phenominal.

PS – For info 1200MW is 1,600,000 horsepower. It would take almost 20 of the biggest diesel engines (as per TB’s post) to produce the same power.

Mal – Where is your 720MW unit?

MAN!! that’s a big unit. It’s a lot of power to lose off the system if it trips..

I work at the bigger one in the Lithgow area. The units are rated at 660 Mw. But when the system reserve is low (or prices are high) we can run them in an overload condition of 700 MW.

Anyway sorry for the thread hijack.
