    BETTER LATE THEN NEVER!
    Aren’t I a nice mongrel!
Too busy feeling sorry for myself, I totally forgot about thanking a few people who helped me out when I was preparing for the Yellow Mountain race.
I wanted to do a few little mod’s to the standard ‘fiddy’ before unleasing it and me on YM.
I fitted the 30L fuel tank that came with the bike. Then I purchased a front moose, a bashplate, oversize front disc, braided front brake line & a K & N air filter
Scott at Battyes was set the task of sourcing a damper & rims and then servicing & setting up the front forks.
Sourcing the damper was a nightmare from the start. Certain brands & suppliers must be selling heaps & making too much money! – Because they just weren’t interested – they were a joke.
Time was running out, because it had to be all done for the Capertee ride – a good prep run for the YM race, some two weeks later.
In the end, Scott decided to use a contact to source a Scotts kit for a fiddy from the US direct.
Well, the damper arrived on the Tuesday & rims on the Wednesday before Capertee.
I couldn’t get to Battyes before Thursday lunch. When I arrived,
Scott was doing his ‘white man magic’ with the damper, headset bearings & forks. I tried to dis-assemble the wheels, but too many spoke nipples were seized. Once again, Scott to the rescue – He rang CHIVO’S at Granville and asked if they could SUPER URGENTLY re-spoke x2 fiddy wheels. They said “I’LL MOVE A FEW THINGS AROUND AND I’LL DO THEM OVERNIGHT!”
How good is that! So, I cut most the spokes and kept samples of inner & outer spokes for copying & raced them to CHIVO’S.
Got back, fitted “Battye tuned” forks, oversize caliper bracket and braided brake line. Removed speedo (for now), fitted bash plate and plumbed up pump for fuel tank.
After work on Friday, went to CHIVO’S and picked up the wheels. He fitted the biggest stainless steel spokes and nipples he could and new rubber banding around rims. TOP JOB.
Got back, fitted o/s disc, moose and new tyre to front – Michelin super heavy duty tube and old tyre to rear.
Fitted to bike. Replaced brake fluid and adjusted chain etc.
Put 5 litres in tank. Started bike – started but wouldn’t run.
Lesson 1 – 5 litres won’t run my bike in fuel tap ON position.
Moved tap to Auxillary pozzy and ‘wulla’ – a thumping fiddy.
Scott did some more ‘white man magic’ to the mix screws and that was all we had time for, home I went.
Sorry it’s such a long story, but it ends very quickly…………and in a whimpering silent pile of S%$t. (as you probably already know)
I staked my lower shin at Capertee which didn’t repair itself in the 2 weeks before YM.
It’s still giving me trouble nearly a month on, but I should be going to the Watagans in a few weeks – Sweep will be my position me thinks!. The old shin stake did a bit more internal damage than first thought.
A BIG THANKS TO SCOTT AND LOUISE AT BATTYES BIKES AT MENAI (9543 5133) AND CHIVO’S AT GRANVILLE (9682 5950).
