Aaannnd he has put a nice dent in his header.
Good luck with it Mofo
Ollie
June 16, 2012 at 2:07 am #224364I’d say they will sort it out for him. 5 weeks people. I know KTM can be bad with warranty but there is no counter argument here. That’s a mess.
June 16, 2012 at 2:19 am #224365i reckon they will fix it axel
June 16, 2012 at 10:36 am #224327You must be p……….off Moto,I reakon they will fix it and i wasn’t expecting to see that when i clicked on this thread
Good luck with it…………………….
On another note i might whip my clutch cover off and check things out,not keen on dry clutches.June 16, 2012 at 10:57 am #224359Trailboss wrote:Jesus bad luck mate  That’s a full rebuilt it reckon, shit! That fine aluminum gets everywhere :blink:Did the clutch pressure plate bolt come loose or did it snap first?
TB
I can’t see the bolt or spring retainer. It looks to have come loose, not snapped, and is either on the road to Laguna or floating around in the engine.
I’m actually in quite good spirits about it (don’t really know why) and as long as it gets fixed in the appropriate manner I’m sure it will be fine.
I do want it completely stripped down and every bearing replaced though. The oil looks like metallic paint and the aluminium fines will be absolutely everywhere.
I’m not blaming anyone, as TB says it’s one of those things nobody could pick would happen. It’s happened to me which is rather unfortunate given the ‘teething’ issues I already had though.
It’s had a tough few weeks though. I’ve managed to bend both radiators, rip the seat and dent the header pipe! Maybe I should learn to ride better
June 16, 2012 at 12:31 pm #224328It looks like the bolt has scored its way through the casing hence the perfect circle.
I dont reckon it will be that serious as I think the oil is filtered before being pumped to the head.
My clutch on the 990 disintegrated whilst down in the Vic High country after a mate clutch stabbed it up some rock steps fully loaded with knobbies.
Boltons posted a clutch overnight and I replaced it on the roadside in Omeo.June 16, 2012 at 1:04 pm #224369moto wrote:Trailboss wrote:Jesus bad luck mate  That’s a full rebuilt it reckon, shit! Don’t stuff around with it get it completely rebuilt otherwise you’ll regret it and so will your pocket and so will your dealer
June 16, 2012 at 1:22 pm #224329Otherwise if your not confident they have done the right thing put it on Bikepoint and try something different.
June 16, 2012 at 1:33 pm #224372That sux moto

And yes that it ground aluminium all over my clutch pressure plate. All the factory riders are doing it.
Oh and don’t forget to add tiny particles of aluminium to your oil either to help prevent it thinning out in this cold weather.
Shall I go all in and dry sump it too?
Still, the bike is 5 weeks old, probably time for a top and bottom rebuild anyway
Ouch Moto, at first I thought you’d hit something with the header & cover damaged!
As Chicken said, my XR had the post fail on the flywheel allowing the bolt to come loose… float out & grind away on the magnesium cover.
Even though they have a paper oil filter, a bottom tank (frame) screen & a rubber edge sealed sump screen – metal still went through the engine & box. I spent days trying to rinse the metal out – it just kept coming. And it hadn’t run for very long.
Insist they pull it right down mate, it’s the only way.Crash
Ps, does your bash plate have wings that stick out to protect the cover & header?
June 16, 2012 at 7:25 pm #224331Or send them here to go shopping for ya,,,

Brand new engines from Dakar spares still with the crates,,,
Or the Dave Schwarz full bike :woohoo:Good Luck with it mate,,, sucks at the moment,,, but yeah Shit Happens unfortunately
June 16, 2012 at 9:16 pm #224375Minusone – Yes, the bolt gouged the engine case causing the failure. I’m sure the bike will work fine with a simple flush and new parts but I don’t believe it’s the most sensible long term fix.
The banjo filter filtering oil to the head isn’t fine enough to catch the smallest alloy particles so they will be everywhere. When they are that fine they ingress into bearings and every nook and cranny.
The only proper option is a strip down, anything else is half arsing it and asking for trouble. I don’t want the big end or gearbox bearings flogging out when I’m a few months out of warranty.
June 16, 2012 at 9:39 pm #224380Hey Moto, did go off with a bang ? If it did, it must have frightened shit out of you :pinch:
PTW

Yes, the cover blew out and hit my boot along with a gob full of oil. I did move my leg rather fast  The spring was scarping on the casing once it popped out so it wasn’t making a good noise!
Cheers for the offer rickybobby
I can’t take the bike to the dealer until next Sat but hope it doesn’t take too long to get sorted.
Funny thing is part of getting a new bike was to start to ride every weekend again and get some miles in. Of the 5 or so weeks I’ve had it this will be the second weekend of riding I’ll miss!
It was ripping on Sat morning though :woohoo:
