With racytracy up at the farm for the weekend, I thought I would do a difficult ride. It doesn’t get much harder than murph’s erzberge adventures. Racy, the poor girl, would have crashed 100s of times if she did a ride like this. Actually she would have got hurt in the first 2 minutes. Seriously, the first man down was 2 minutes into the journey. And it didn’t let up from there.

I have heard how tough murph’s rides are and thought there would be a couple of hard hills along the way. To my surprise. It was nearly all hard.
Always going up or down. And so much single line. I have never really used 1st gear prior to this ride.

I have to learn to pick my overtaking spots better. I tried to pass mal3.0 on a rocky down hill. When I pulled out I realised the hill was steeper and rockier that I thought. I ended up hitting a tree and breaking it off at the base (sorry tree), with me hanging over a drop. Luckily / unluckily I was caught by my groin stuck on the end off the handle bar.:S

Only 1 flat. And it was lotsa’s car.

    Woke up at 5am
    Left home at 6am
    Got home at 6:30pm
    Asleep by 7:30pm

Really impressed the ability of all the riders involved. I suppose that the fact that murph is leading weeds out a lot of riders from the start. People know that they are in for a tough ride.

We started with 8. due to attrition. Buggered bodies and bikes we finished with 6.

Really casual bunch of guys. Need to be as the ride was anything but casual. No drama queens. Just diggers digging in as a team. And smiles and laughs all day.

    Thanks guys.

lotsa always looks like this. no matter what

    murph does it again!!
kind of makes dogwatch alright, not that Im chicken but that looks like some hard yakka.
great terrain, photos give good indication of how steep it is.
would like some commentary on the pic of bloke going over the front of his bike.

roy, why is it that when we ride together its carnage, when you lead its carnage, when I lead …very little carnage..on the same trails..hmm
to be fair these Basin rides are on another level.
Be good to read other riders accounts.

hia morgo. i can’t remember the guy’s name. i’m terrible with names. the photos are out of order now, but it happened late in the trip. after this we decided that we should start making our way back.

anyway we were zigzaging our way down this hill. don’t know the name of the hill. others will know as this is a popular one. i said to the guy next me (old mate on the wr (excellent bloke and rider by the way)) we should just head straight down the centre. it did look possible. anyway he did. from the top we could not see that the lower step drops down a metre into a uphill little bit. enough to trap your front wheel. by the time he relised this, it was too late. he let go of the brakes as you should, but it was impossible to save and cart wheeled down the hill. he was ok. but bent the rear sprocket. it was bent back enough with tyre levers to be able to ride the roads back to the cars.

    about to go over

mal3.0 decides to take it carefully and save his new bike

trueing the sprocket. murph rode back up to see what happened to us and help out

Sorry about the hill Mal but I did say you could of waited at the creek. I’m sure no one would of hassled you for not attempting the hill climb on your not so brand new Husky;)
Seriously Mal I hope the Husky came out unscathed:unsure:
We have some good footage of your attempt, hope Donna doesn’t see it:S
Some more photos and footage will come as Mal posts it:woohoo:

Spoke with Mal regarding this ride today at the trials, said it was interesting

Nice work Champo, I recognised a couple of those tracks, can’t say it’s my cup of tea though with all that pushing and pulling. Well done to all that made the ride.

Grade 4+ yes it was, right from the start single tracks that were well w o r n,
had me 1st off trying to avoid a deep down rut but hangers caught a sapling tree and down I go,
Body armour is a good thing.;)

Started to get my mojo so all cool.B)

We went down one track that was just dust very very steep into a creek at the bottom, all the time trying to wash off speed,’ SPLASH’ were in the creek, lucky it wasn’t deep. “Only water all day”.

Back to the cars for top up on fuel and off for 2nd loop which started off single trail and stayed that way ,hard going ,a few more small offs but you get that ,I was thinking “ how about some twin trail so I could recoup:huh: but that aint happening .

Champo had the off of the day for my money he was riding up 2 steps then high sided down the step with bike cart wheeling over him ‘looked serious’ but he’s OK :cheer: lucky he’s a hard bustard  he took another go and made it easy.B) All the group were really good riders ‘I was the weakest link’,
Climbing wave rock road sapped all the energy from me, had ran out of water (reasons and excuses) and at fuel drop I pulled the pin, after 5 hours of riding I had had enough, so that’s that.
    enjoyed the day.:P
    Dude.
