Nothing better to do than dig at a ride just because you don’t want to/can’t do it?
Maybe the guys that like technical rides should be more outspoken about your rides (typically the type of ride they prefer not to do)?
I have a question about the Caves ride:
Wouldn’t I have been better off doing it in my Subaru?
Murph’s rides are like your rides, the people know what they are going to get when they go on them, if you don’t like them, don’t go. Like Murph said, the hills are do-able, and that’s where the challenge lies for the people that like to go on these rides.

All good points, moto. Maybe it needs toning down a little though!
I am not a huge fan of the long-distance rides and think Murph’s ride would be awesome. That said, if I was on a ride like the Hill End ride I did I would have a ball!
And I don’t know that I have to be any more outspoken about the rides that I prefer not to do… not really!
How about we arrange a Subaru Ride in the near future, I’ll bring my X-trail and put it up against the Suby! :silly:
September 3, 2009 at 2:03 am #150996Thank for the response Moto, you have taken it the wrong way, I couldn’t answer the students questions regarding trials tyres or trials bikes because I haven’t ridden either and I dont like to answer questions I know nothing about or have limited experience with I save that for my job as a trainer. You will notice I dont comment on subjects I know nothing about.
You have no idea where I ride or what I really like riding, the Hillend, Jurds and the Caves ride that you quoted for example are rides I have run for OBT and for every member on the site to be able to complete comfortably and have a fun time as a social occasion is that to hard to understand for everybody to have a good time. These events are for the growth of OBT for all and sundry not just for me or you.
I have ridden everyone of those trails that I see in Murphs ride over the 20 years I have ridden in the Watagans and even said to Murph in a PM yesterday I will come along on one of his rides next year after my shoulder reconstruction when I can lift and drag a bike if I need to.
I have raced the A4DE’s, Condo 750’s, Yellow Mountains, Pony Expresses, Enduros, Cross Country’s, Sprint Races, Motocross, short circuit and many club events over the years and love all and any riding, neither is riding fire trails my favourite past time. From time to time to see something or learn new areas I have to ride a fire trail or even a bitumen section but its only a means to an end.

ps Moto you are a moley mole bag
September 3, 2009 at 2:10 am #150997Champo and Mal thanks for explanations, the two students did read the responses this morning before they did their practical tests as a mentioned before I have no experience with neither area
Sorry this turned into a hi jack Murph I didnt mean for it to happen

AnonymousJust a quick word on trials tyres. I run a Michelin X11 on the back. In technical stuff, including mud and slop and dusty rocks it is in its element. Way more grip than most knobbies. Where it falls down is on fast hardpack. If you rode behind me on the Wollombi ride you would have noticed the bike “wandering” all over the place on the dirt roads and bitumin. Scary. The X11 is a radial ply and very soft in the sidewalls.
The Pirelli MT43 is a cross ply and is widely used for dirt track. (Or so I am led to believe). Stronger side walls mean less flex at speed so is the preferred tyre for trail riding. If you want to try one try that.
By the way, to stop the tyre from slipping at low pressures I bought a billet rim lock from Ballards. The tyre has never moved at pressures as low as 8psi. Then again the KLX is not exactly a fire breather.
old al
September 3, 2009 at 4:48 am #151001Not bad Al, except the MT43 is actually a full on trials tyre, and yes it does have better sidewalls than the X-11 and from many reports from those who’ve used both better grip in shale/rocky stuff as well. I found it wandered a bit, but it’s two biggst downfalls are
*Swampgrass and absolute swamp country, the boys with knobbies found traction…I was stuck spinning with no forward motion.
*Cornering, they suck bigtime at speed cornering, too square and too something not right here feeling. But for the likes of what the boys posted up on Murphs ride probably the antz pantz,
BC
PS: I ran mine between 6-8psi with 2 alloy rimlocks, no creep nothing, stiff carcass probably didn’t hurt either.

Moto,
I’m sensing a whole heap of anger in your post that didn’t seem to be there before you went away for work. I think it’s the dirt bike riders version of “Blue Balls” – me thinks you need a release…….take the Katie for a ride….please…..this crankyness makes your forehead go all wrinkley anyway!!
OOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM, OOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM
What do you reckon moley mole.
Crash
ps. the subby through the creek at dingo dell…I’d love to see that.
CrashSeptember 3, 2009 at 6:40 am #150994All rides are up to you and youre ability ( thats what ride grades are for ) if you go on a grade 4 to 5 ride expect it to be hard or hardish for the experts.
As for murph’s rides yeah they are challenging ( my broked shoulder can vouch for that) but on all the rides i have done with murph, morgo and co i have had a ball and all riders including the begginers have always helped each other.
:cheer:
some people should just sell there bike and stay home and let the people who enjoy the riding and look after where they are riding so we can do it all again next weekendSeptember 3, 2009 at 6:47 am #151017Thats what the whole OBT thing is about Scotty h

CrashYour right crash. I think someone needs a big hug from his bike.
September 3, 2009 at 11:07 am #151040I forgot to tell everyone how much I enjoyed the ride and thank Murf for leading, so consider yourselves told and thanked.
Its been a while since Ive done those hills because I don’t like having to get off my bike to push but it was a really good challenge and I enjoyed it immensely.
Everyone helped everyone else out, the lollies flowed freely….Ive never eaten so many lollies on a trail ride… and there was always a laugh to be had.
Brilliant

AnonymousWell, I’m big enough to admit when I’ve overstepped the mark and as most have pointed out I agree my previous post was a little ‘heavy handed’, no excuses, so for that I apologise.
What’s worse is that I may not be able to go on Murph’s ride due to extenuating circumstances, not a happy camper
