Hey guys, bit of advice please.
Planning on doing a little trip from Ballina out to Camerons corner. BMW650dakar, DR650 and another suzuki V strom.

Just out of curiousity which bike would you rather be on?

It looks on the maps like the tar goes all the way out to Bourke.
The road turns dirt or gravel from there. Is that right ?

Is it logical to get a set of dirt tyres fitted at Bourke? and then on return get the more road oriented tyres refitted?
Also is going out on the main roads going to be interesting enough or should we be considering back tracks?
Looks like staying on the main roads fuel is available pretty much everywhere.
    Many thanks. Any advice appreciated.

Depends on which way you are going as to which bike would be best I reckon Trev. I road a 650 Veestrom to the corner last year. Wen the going got a bit tough I wish I had something lighter but on the long slab sections was glad I had it. If it rains and the dirt roads turn to mush and slime then you want the lightest bike possible, I had a hell of a time getting out of Menindee lakes last years after heavy overnight rain. I also found the sandy sections of the roads we took hard to manage as the bike would wriggle like a snake, especially when I wasn’t paying attention and hit them at 100kmh +.

You could also have a look at the write up TB did on his tenere, he reviewed a couple of different tyres there as well. Lotsa was on a DR650 on that trip so he may be able to give some info on the hi’s and low’s of that bike.

Good uck with it whatever you do

As Jeffro said it depends what way you go, I’v done Coffs Harbour Cameron Corner. Rode pretty much bitumen, bit and pieces of dirt to Narrabri then dirt from Narrabri to Bourke through Carinda.

Yes your right its dirt just after North Bourke pretty much all the way to the corner, fuel at Wanaaring but maybe ring ahead to make sure he has some, then fuel at Tiibooburra.

Any of those bikes mentioned would be fine for the trip. As for tyres IMO you can’t beat Dunlop 606’s value for money no need to change tyres at Bourke. One set will be fine.

Thanks for the info. Do you think the road is interesting enough just sticking to the main track? or is it worth trying to get off the beaten track?

The run from Bourke to the Corner is a good one. Perhaps on your way back head north east to Nocundra then come back along the border, alternate between gravel and bitumen back to Goondi before you head south east to Coffs.
