I happened to catch the end of a documentary yesterday. It was on the top ten bikes ever made and the top 3 surprised me. Here is what they said were the top 3.

In 3rd place The Honda CB750……Comment,”innovative, reliable, great handling but boring to ride.”

In 2nd place………..The Ducati 916………..Comment, Sex on wheels.

In 1st place, this suprised me……over 40,000,000 units sold world wide,Comment. “Indestructable, they just keep on going” ,in the documentary, they gave one to Charlie Boorman to see if he could kill it. He drained the engine oil, filled it with used chip fat and flogged the thing all day,in the end he threw it of a 22 story building and the thing still started!!

Any idea what this mighty machine could have been???

Yep the mighty HONDA Cub 90!!!

i actually guessed right on the cub. we know them here bast as postie bikes.

very similar design to the z50 motors that we put 140cc through, race them and still won’t die.

i agree with the top 3 they came up with.

Ahhh the memories. I once owned a K2 750 four, rough as hell, i think they used straight bits of water pipe for suspension and the bloke i got it off had re done the seat with stuff all padding. :) i can remember flogging a cub 90 around the back yard as a kid,and as for the ducati well i can only dream there    :)

    :woohoo:
I have ridden pillion on a Ducati 916 around the Newcastle beaches through the Mattara Hillclimb route & up along Scenic drive to Charlestown & back,,,
And it was a weapon and I remember hitting the helmet into the back of the rider at least twice under brakes

On the way back to Carrington, we pulled off the line at the lights & were hitting a scary speed real quick before braking for the roundabout

It was quite a bike & a hell of a ride :woohoo:

Two years ago I was seriously considering buying a Ducati 916 Senna….production number 619, from a dealer in Japan. The thing that stopped me was the bullshit I would have had to go through to get it ADR complied. There was no guarantee that I would ever be able to register it.
I had a SD900 Ducati when I was 20, it was a great bike to ride, bastard to keep running though.

Nice thread and subject Mick. Two Hondas in the top three, I couldn’t pick the number 1 like you Mick, I mean realistically out of the number of different models of bikes built around the would by different manufacturers and being someones opinion you are 2nd guessing it could be anything being honest

The Duke well they are sex on wheels, the 748, the 916, the 996, the 999 and the 1098.

Again Mick great thread and go the Honda cub / postie

Don’t for get the Ducati’s naughty siblings the Monsters!

even the small bore 600 = 583cc of pure fury :silly:

and what about the Hypermotard?!?!?! :woohoo:

as for the 1098 it took me until a personalised number plate as to why they didn’t just name it 1100  i mean it was a mouth full talking about the Ducati Thousand and ninety Eight

    nsw number plate =TEN98

i then asked the rta, SIX00 was taken!

    .

So I don’t understand, I mean I can name a lot of indestructible bikes that do everything better then a Honda 90 cub, or was judged on the number sold by affordability. Either way I wouldn’t have picked it I think like most because in my opinion its been judged on units sold not best ever

    But it is a Honda :P :P

    Whatever Trevor :P

Always the one to go against the flow here……..

Are you trying to say that because all of India, Asia and Europe are riding these little pussbox cubs around for their economy and reliability and 40 gazillion units sold that they are the best bike…come on guys get it together….
In the automotive world the most units of cars sold is not the best car, ask the Mercedes, jag, Porsche , BMW, ferrari and I am sure there is lots lots lots more….all better cars to drive than pussbox production city commuters that would probably easily top the sales stakes…….now where would the VW Bettle be , the best in the world because they remain unchanged for 1000 years of sales….now arent they a pleasure to drive

Maybe it was the most sold the little cub, but the best….at that stage I would have gone and had a look at my fish tank to get more entertainment.

I am sure there is a more accurate way of determining the Best bike other than sales figures

You only have to ride one to KNOW……. :)

I agree with the CB750/4 being in the top 3, but totally disagree with the 916, it was styling excercise with good handling-true, but hardly outstanding it had far less mumbo than the others and is only desirable due to it’s desirability, I’ve ridden most of the Dukes and they are charasmatic, the 888 and 900ss mostly so for me. But the britten V2 was a far superior bike that whooped everything ass at daytona, and the honda 90 while popular doesn’t make it the best, like politicians really.
While i disagree with the Ct90/Cubs inclusion and the Duck 916, that doesn’t mean I know what I’d put in there instead, probably the DT-1 or first triumph scramblers, maybe the Laverda triple or four or six or…………………
