I can understand the reason for including the Hondas in the top three, but really if you had the choice of any bike would you have either one????
The Duke on the other hand…. I had an SS for years and only sold it to help buy my farm. I’d have another Duke in a heatbeat. It’s like owning a Ferrari instead of a Falcon.

In the automotive world the most units of cars sold is not the best car, ask the Mercedes, jag, Porsche , BMW, ferrari and I am sure there is lots lots lots more….all better cars to drive than pussbox production city commuters that would probably easily top the sales stakes…….now where would the VW Bettle be , the best in the world because they remain unchanged for 1000 years of sales….now arent they a pleasure to drive     :laugh:Maybe it was the most sold the little cub, but the best….at that stage I would have gone and had a look at my fish tank to get more entertainment.
I am sure there is a more accurate way of determining the Best bike other than sales figures
You only have to ride one to KNOW…….
Rat this wasn’t about sales figures and that shows with the 916 at no.2, plenty bigger sales than that.
It was about the bikes influence in the world of motorcycling.
For the CB750 in it’s time it was a mass produced bike that brought to the masses better performance and reliabilty than even expensive custom bikes of the day could offer.
With the Ducati it was it’s styling, this bike brought a new era for styling of sports bikes that most other brands have tryed to emulate.
The cub has simply got more people around the world riding bikes than any other bike in history. It might not be the kind lf riding that we all do but the people who ride them are motorcylist all the same. It’s influence on the masses is simply unchallenged by any other motorcycle.
Add to that its reliability and some off the places this bike has gone, im sure we’ve all seen stories of people doing round the would trips on these thing.
We apraise Ewen McGregor and Charlie Borman for riding around the world on state of the art BMW’s with 2 support cars. People have been doing this for years on posties unsupported.
Look at the big picture. It’s not just about the fastest, sexiest or blingest.

Yeah that makes sense Scotty well done, still like Mick’s orginal post (and I have reread it) I like he said he wouldnt have picked it as a honda cub 90 unless it was postie bikes in general maybe (and even that a stretch for me) as I will never know it all or confess to.
Moto said today he saw the story as well, what was the show or channel Mick do you remember as I forgot to ask Moto

would have been a good show to watch
November 15, 2009 at 9:46 pm #161148Yeah it would have been, pity I only caught the last three.
Jay Leno was one of the judges/compares.November 15, 2009 at 9:52 pm #161149I saw a program about Leno last year and he has a massive collection of bike including a Y2K. The program was mainly about the Y2K and a speed run which was interesting
Some specs and details here

November 15, 2009 at 10:26 pm #161150OK i lost respect for that list as soon as you put the top ten down, it is obviously a personal biased list from someone, as the HD gets a guernsey yet no mention whatsoever of any eastern block or german brands, a token Brit and sorry but the V8 Guzzi what a joke, and the Y2K yes nifty but hardly in the top ten that are actually made for real people to own.
Sorry I’m going to disagree, a farce of a list perpetuated by a self delusional author (not you Mick, although you may be, but not that I’m aware of….
)
If we include the cub what about the venerable MZs and eastern block Dnieper, Jawas etc.
If we include innovation there are many more better than the y2k and achieveable to actually own
If we include styling why was the 916 singled out, KAWASAKI was first with that spaceship from hell look before Ducati
If we include for spped and power what about the Kawasaki Z1000/R- Ninja series, the early brits, The later BMWs, Suzukis Katana/GSXR evolution, Hondas CB dynasty etc
If we include race replicas what about the 4 cyl smokers from the eighties and the Kawasaki H series.
BTW even back in the day the CB750/4 had a rep for having a hinge in the middle of the frame, that’s why there where many aftermarket frames made for them, so saying it was good habndling musta been from a boulevarde riders POV.
Good thread Mick, I love these sorta discussions.
#1- will be the original motorcycle, it started it all off- built by Daimler.
Bruce- the rebellious

I agree Blue as I said above from the start, Scotty’s reply was on the money as to why and I agree 100% but then the fact an argument could be raised for a lot of bikes makes what is number 1 in the eyes of the author and as for knowing what it was going to be, well hindsight is 20 / 20 vision isnt it
Still would have been a good watch because
A/ it was about bikes
B/ Honda was the winner

November 15, 2009 at 10:41 pm #161151Yes Mr Blue,
I dont entirely agree with the list either,in my point of view the bike has to have been actually available to the average punter to get a gong.I might add that the documentary appeared to be made in England from the bits that I saw.Read what you want into that.
As for Harley Davidson,if they had of named a Harley as no1 I would have thrown something at the tele.
