November 4, 2012 at 8:57 pm #231989I think Suzuki JR80. I saw one going around at the taree track a couple of months ago looked good. Oil injected low maintenance.

November 4, 2012 at 10:25 pm #231992I went through the whole 50cc scenario with my daughter.
We started her on a PW50 then we got a KTM mini adventure, then she progressed to the KTM pro senior of which we had two. She raced all four bikes and she was fastest on the mini adventure I think. Being air cooled and not so highly strung it was easier for her to manage. And it just kept going and going with minimal problems. The Pro senior however, was a totally different kettle of fish, it was loud and obnoxious and toey as a tom cat. If you let her ride it for to long on a grass track the things would get hot and burn the stator out and it would run like a hairy goat until you forked out the $160 for a new stator.
Once she started to get to tall for the pro senior and it was time to learn how to change gears we got her a PW80, once she got the hang of that and it was time to learn the clutch, she spent some time on a DS80 (JR80). once the clutch and gears were mastered we put her on a KX65 and she never looked back, the KX’s are great little bikes, we have had 4 over the years with out an issue of any sort and now she has a KX100 that goes like a scalded cat.
If your young bloke is small in stature at the moment, I would seriously look at a KTM mini or senior Adventure.
November 4, 2012 at 10:48 pm #232001Is the pro senior the same as a sx50
50sx mini
50 sx mini adven
sx50 ?SEnior junior??WTF
November 4, 2012 at 10:56 pm #232002The SX and the Pro Senior are the one and same. After 09 they started calling them Mini SX (I think)
I think they make a Pro Junior as well, Both are water cooled screamers. :pinch:
The Adventure series comes in both Senior and junior versions. The Junior being shorter in seat height.
The Adventure series are more user friendly, being air cooled and a whole heap quieter!November 4, 2012 at 11:03 pm #232005Just google the KTM website you stupid farmer

all that crap doesn’t tell me what you can and can’t modify to you own requirements :laugh:I’m of the suspicion a mini of any version may only suit him for 6 months

I’m about sick of this shite 👿
Maybe he can walk
November 5, 2012 at 6:36 am #232025i think thats the main issue with any kids bob they grow out of them quick im lucky theres 20 months between my 2 boys im gettin roughly 2 years out of each bike as they get handed down by the time i get the second year my youngest has well and truly grown to move on.
The ktm sx junior i have at its highest seat height is 600 mm and with the lowest its about570mm (this is with the lower seat that i have) ive seen other ktms have the stator problem but they also have the clutches set up so they are either a light switch on or off with there power so to get them going there working hard all the time but thats only the way you set the clutch up you can have these bikes a little bit tamer with a bit of mucking around.
I thought about going the crf 70 way but its also 20 kg heavier seat is 663mm tall and at that stage ( my boys were 6&8 and also short asses) didnt think it was the way to go
i feel for you mate its a hard to say which way you should go take him in to the honda dealer and see if he could go a crf70.
what ever bike you buy it wont last that long before they grow out of it but the key is ( i think anyway ) dont but to much bike so they keep on falling off and dont want to get back on itNovember 5, 2012 at 7:08 am #232035to give you an idea on size heres when i first bought up against a kdx 50 at its lowest height with the low seat on
and heres one 12 mths later next to the ktm 65 before i got the 65 lowered and the 50 was at its tallest height
