i thought the same of the DR not cutting it. but there is a story on TT i think, of 2 chicks that hired 2 DRs and rode from Melb to Perth, the bikes were set up with 21 L tanks and hard panniers that were double walled, sort of. they were a water bottle on the outer skin and a normal box/ storage in the inner section.

i’ll see if i can find the story and post it up.

boy that was painful  i had to do the whole reset password so i could search up the thread.
    2 girls with 2 DR650’s – 3 weeks – 4 time zones – Australia

    Nice one XY.
I think they’re my kind of girls – riding on the beach wearing nothing but a helmet and bikini

For a trip that large I would definatley be looking at the KLR XL1000 or the BMW800. I have ridden the Tenere and it would definatley eat the Klms but i found it boring and under powered for the street.

I would personally opt for the Honda simply because I love the delivery of the big v-twin and with a some pipes it just sounds so horn that would keep me company on such a big trip. I had the XR650r and loved it but i had a standard tank which meant a fuel stop every 100-130ks and the seat gave by rear blisters on 500k plus trips.

If your are looking at doing any reasonable amount of ks on the road with dual sport tyres on the XR i would recommend a big tank, a gel seat and cush drive for the rear wheel hub. I had some gear box issues that could be attributed to the cushless drive on the freeway.

Wish I never sold the XR….. didn’t know at the time there would be no more.

for the big trips i recomend a ford falcon with cruse control a radio and with built in heater and air conditioner the bike can ride outside in the trailer.

If you must offload it, send it down to me mate

It all comes down to what you really want to do the most I suppose,,,, Would be awsome to win Lotto & have a bike for all occasions, but that`s not a reality for most of us sadly :(

    One day I want to have a commuter, a 450 Traily & a Dualsport Tourer :)
Thats my dream , ok to dream I reckon , gives me something to aspire to :woohoo:
