December 19, 2008 at 5:48 am #105111found this on trade me nz
Make: Honda
Model: XR650R2
Engine size: 680cc
Kilometres: 9,999km
Year: 2002
This XR650R is in excellent condition.
It was originally fitted with a 680 HRC kit by Honda NZ. The bike is still in its original livery as stickered by Honda NZ back when it was new.
It had a total engine rebuild in Aug 2006, to the 680 spec, at a total cost of $6,820. Basically the engine is in brand new condition, it has done 41.5 hrs on this fresh motor.
It has a full Pro Circuit T4 exhaust system, Rental bars, Moto minder and recently new chain and sprockets.
This bike is fast, very fast and extremely fun to ride, the power keeps you smiling every time you ride it.
This is the second XR650R that I have owned, they are fantastic bikes with enormous amounts of power, especially with the HRC kit.
This is a relunctant sale, as I said the bike is in excellent condition but with the addition of child number three I must sell one of my toys.Bike buyer’s checklist

December 19, 2008 at 5:57 am #115629December 19, 2008 at 6:06 am #115630Looks nice, have heard of the 680 kits, you can also buy a 720cc kit form the states OMG ! , my bike will pull gearing that will lug me over dirt at 165kph I know for a fact, I also know with the safari gearing on a closed section of three lane freeway a Saturday night it would do over 170kph I know for a fact.
Crashes Stock 650, different exhaust, pulls 100mph
They are Fast bikes that when set up handle very well, ask rider X he shit cans my bike every minute he gets, but followed me in the watagans and was amazed how how well the suspension works slow and high speed. It gets me through the tight stuff just fine and dandy, ask Moto.
Gilli rode it in tight and fast stuff and spoke very highly of it.
Buy it, good thing they are going to be harder to get soon.

December 20, 2008 at 7:46 pm #115632Hey trailboss what are these like to start, do the r’s have an electric leg or only kickstart
what are thr 650’s like to say my 2002 426 mines got the later 450 cam mod so no decomp lever
would the performance be similar,?what about the handling?December 20, 2008 at 9:33 pm #115677The 650 has the same or more power but its a different feel, they rev slower, even mine with HRC cams and lightened flywheel is still a lot slower to rev, but the power so much more usable.
When set up correct they handle great, as I have put in this thread before Gilli rode mine and was impressed, rider X talked about how good my bikes suspension is, it is a heavier bike than your 426 for sure but I like a heavy bike, it has benefits as well as negatives for sure.
The R model is the model you want hasn’t got an electric start, if you know how to start them and use the decomp lever and do it the right way they are no problem to start. They also don’t stall as easily as your 426 because of the heavier flywheel effect and rotating mass. There are after market electric leg kits you can get, english company makes them I have seen one in the flesh and they look good but I have no problem starting mine etc so I dont bother.

December 21, 2008 at 5:41 am #105113Well as some of you may know (moto has been dropping comments) I cracked the engine on 650 two weeks ago whilst changing the oil by over tightening the sump plug.
GREG BALL MOTOR CYCLE ENGINEERING at Kirrawee did the repair for me after I contacted Scott from Battyes in a mild panic. I pulled the engine out and took it to Greg, Greg quickly put all my fears to rest and told me how they would fix it and that there would be no long therm problems.
I left it on the Monday morning and had it back Wednesday arvo for $60, and what a great job. Crash picked it up for me and he rang me to tell me what a great job Greg had done.
Having the engine wasnt all bad I had sometime to fix some bits and pieces and lockwire some bolts etc, my bike has most of its bolt heads and nuts drilled to be lock wired from when it was built for the Safari.
I cleaned all the areas that you normally dont get to and checked the valves, that again didnt need adjustment (not thats its a dramam with screw and nut adjusters)
Test rode it no leaks all happy days, there Moto its going again, you ready?
