So just getting this right in my head the engine oil was low causing the release bearing to run dry . I bet he will be pist off
when finds out a bit of oil would’ve fixed the problem . Great job Lefty , picked up and repaired in the same day , awesome

The Jury is still out on this Bones. After talking to TB he mentioned that there was some plastic or Nylon type material in the release bearing shaft. I couldn’t find any. I lubed everything up and have done 20km trouble free. I have a genuine workshop manual which i will study later tonight and see if there is anything plastic/nylon that may fail inside. I will drop the oil and filter also to see if there is anything there.

    Cheers,
    Lefty

1st and foremost , Lefty , Jason Barrett and Adv Moto Steve … Your all legends. ;) :) Thanks for the pick ups , the loan bike :woohoo: and the investigative repairwork.

The day started with 50 km of fun roads out to Bilpin where I pulled in the clutch and a load squealing noise suddenly started . No matter what gear I was in , even neutral , the noise was very worrying.

We pulled off the side casing and found 3 small pieces of nylon/ plastic in and around the clutch plates with one in particular in the gear teeth of the release shaft. We thought maybe a bush had failed and spred itself around but on-one knew where from. Now it’s the end for the Ten on this ride. :(

Enter Jason who with 20 minutes had the bike loaded and on it’s way back to his workshop. He dropped everything to help out and was straight in helping get Steves BMW GS800 ready to ride. A hour later and we were of and I was stoked that the bike was soon to be in lefty’s very capable hands !

TB and I talked at length as to what the problem could be and oil was mentioned. I gave the bike an oil change and replaced the old oil with 2.8l of Motul 5100 as usual and the dip stick showed about 2mm over full. I bought a new funnel as it’s a bugger to fill and the funnel had an oil filter screen in it.
We knew lefty would be right onto it and tried not to think of the worst case scenarios !!

Steves BMW has a stack of power and took a while to tame with plenty of sideways action out of corners :woohoo: before long I was really enjoying the Beemer and found it actually land well of some big erosion mounds too !!!

My bike failure stuffed the planned route and TB made the best of it and we had a ball on the mix of trails we rode, then 538km later found ourselves sitting in Gunning pub after meeting Lance from Trailzone and talking about the coming days !!!!

    Bring it on !!!

I was just having a cheep shot Nickj , Lefty left the door open and you never now who will stick there nose in,

the DRs have been taking a bit of a beating lately.

I’m interested in this nylon you found and where it’s from though . Also where the oil went in such a short time ???

So we will wait on the verdict .

Have a great ride lads looking forward to the RR

  I have just found the problem on the big Ten. Oil pump driven gear failure. Both the oil pump and water pump gears are plastic and the oil pump gear has exploded due to oil pump seizure. (More on that later) However the good news is I believe that we have saved the engine from terminal failure. :cheer: I have ordered some new parts and will re-assemble when I get them and check that everything is ok. (Fingers crossed)

I must apologise. I went to the start yesterday and took some photo’s and a vid of the boy’s leaving Windsor, however i haven’t had time to scratch myself at the moment, I will try to post then as soon as i get a bit of time.

    Cheers,
    Lefty

Good find there Lefty, makes you wonder what caused the oil pump to seize.
I suppose its out of warranty now.

Just looked at the radar and it looks as though they are having a dry ride atm. They are in Bongo SF west of Canberra.

Plastic oil pump drive gears were mentioned recently in a DRZ400 i think Lefty . Good find though well done .

Oil pump seizure is a concern and should it be part of service/prep work / spares carried?

Anyhow back to the RR . Looks like everything is moving along nicely .

Day 2 started bright and early with everyone on their bikes by 7.30 , we rode out of Gunning and were soon into the gravel roads, Lance from Trailzone asked us to stop if their were any good photo opportunities so with TB leading , myself navigating and DJ watching our backs we headed south.
It wasn’t long before we left the graded gravel roads and got into some twin tracks that lead us up into Kosiosko national park , that’s where things got exciting as the track got a bit rougher and wound up and up with some fast flowing forest sections !

Lance was riding the  Triumph Tiger 800 and can really get the big bike moving, he snuck up on us in one section and DJ let TB and I know over the Bluetooth that he was their , we both turned up the heat and sped through a nice winding forest section. It was great fun with the Tenere up front , then the BMW , the Triumph and DJ sticking with us on his DR650.

Once on the plain we stopped for some pics then headed into the Cabramurra for fuel.

We then rode into Khancoban for a pub stop and beer , with a chat to a local who sent us straight back into the bush we headed up a steep hill out of town. The hill went on for ever and got steeper and steeper. The Beemer was struggling for traction with the tyres being more road orientated but was good fun powering over the erosion mounds.

A mid hill stop showed some very conceded faces but we were committed and kept going. Suddenly TB stopped and said ‘ we’re going down now stay back ‘ and he wasn’t kidding , it’s was as steep and slippery as the up hill and if the big bikes get away theirs no stopping them. Their were a couple of drops but we all made it safely and their were some big high 5s at the bottom :D

The camp spot was awesome right on the river  where we all washed and swam before the beers flowed and the bench racing started !!!

Its ok Beags if at Dakar they could claim to be French them complain that every bump on the road was not in the road book and they would get their time back.

As for Nicks Ten its sounds like he is lucky some of that gear got into the clutch to make a noise otherwise it may have been much worse.
