Great account of the Tiger Trail Andy
I had a smile reading it
We were all nervous going down that hill mate but that’s what I love about adventure riding , the unknown , and the buzz after getting a big fully loaded bike through a hard track makes the beers taste so much better !!!
Anyway what’s the worst that can happen ………

January 31, 2012 at 11:01 pm #215233Great ride, despite you Old Bulls wearing me out I had a blast. Thought I’d share my version of the Tiger Tail, although I’m glad to read that I wasn’t the only one shitting myself. Amazing country and some great tracks.
This is a view of the Tigers Tail from our campsite.
We stopped at a pub after riding all day and met a local in the pub who suggested a nice short cut to our camping destination. I was already feeling sore all over so a short cut sounded good to me. After stocking up on some beers we rode out of town a few KMs and hit the Tiger Tail, with the promise of a nice camping spot on the other side of the “hill”.
As I start to climb a very rocky and obviously unused track it keeps getting steeper and rougher, but once your committed there is no turning back.
I stalled my bike about a kilometer in on a very steep section and dared not look behind me, for a moment I contemplated turning around but this was obviously a dumb idea, so I took a breath restarted the bike and kept my head up praying like only an atheist can and took off up the hill.
I finally made the crest and spat the dummy, letting the guys know that this trail was out of my league. Thankfully all the guys where very level headed and after Steve said maybe I should camp here I “reset”, calmed down and we pushed on all the time thinking how shook up the beer was going to be. The worse part was over the crest with a nasty track winding down at an extreme angle. As I said, once your committed there aren’t too many options aside from bushwalking, so with some encouraging words from the boys I headed down and thankfully made it without falling off.
After everyone reached the bottom there was some talk of riding back to town and beating the shit out of the local, but instead, we found a nice camping spot beside the beautiful Indie River.
All in all no damage and I learnt two lessons. Number one, when you meet a local in the pub and he says “oh yeah I know a great short short cut” be wary. Lesson number two, when a trail has a name involving a vicious animal be wary.
I lived to tell the tale of the Tigers Tail while the guy in the pub was probably having a good laugh.
Thanks Greg for waiting for me……again

January 31, 2012 at 11:44 pm #215238So there we are at the Wombeyan caves turn off its maybe two hrs before dark, the BMW will probably need fuel soon, the Roos will be hopping, it will be well dark before we get to Oberon or Hampton, Kowmung will be up oh and we will be riding into the setting sun on the other side of river. I pulled up and asked the boys the question, I explained the above and the answer was “why are we sitting here listening to you” ok of we went. First of the Roos fronted only a couple of kms down the road before the dirt!! Down across the river, Nick hates heights so I was surprised when I said before the river see the campers down there and he answered “yeah with the blue tarps” I said I didn’t think you would have looked being you are scared of heights well done. Nick laughed and admitted maybe he didn’t looked and was betting they had some blue tarps like all camp sites.. We stopped on the causeway for a quick regroup engine running. We had a great run up using the bluetoothes helps. Once we turned onto Langs Rd it was obvious there had been a fair amount of rain recently. The tracks were slippery but manageable we had a few laughs and everyone had a moment before we reached the turnoff for the TTT rally. We continued on past Limeburners turnoff I noted the gate is still there and locked (a great ride ruined by f€#king wheel drivers)
Anyways we continued the sun was setting as we rode through Mt Werong and the wildlife was out, the fog was coming in and in my ears were my words “I want to finish a ride in the dark” be careful what you wish for peeps
Next thing Nick says the BMW only has 12 kms fuel range left so we decieded to stop and get 1.2 litres out of each of the DRs. The fuel light had been flashing on my Tenere for the last 30 kms but I still had another 120kms from experience. We got the fuel out of the DRs as quickly as we could, Dejay cleaned everyone’s head light covers and a few of us cleaned our glasses and visors.the weather was closing in and we were loving it. We soon turned off the dirt onto Edith rd and headed for Jonolan caves and the rain started, it looked like a Baturst pitstop everyone scrambling for their wet weather gear, gear at had seen light of day all trip. Here comes the fog again
We rode down through the caves I videoed it and will find it and post it later
The ride down and back out of the caves was wet slippery bitumen and when at the top the white lines disappeared I was back to first gear in the fog twice. But no one chucked a Eagle and ran straight ahead into the chain mesh fence :laugh:It was well dark when we got to Hampton pub after 9pm, good news the kitchen was still open and they had beer, rums and rooms.
As we pulled up
We all stayed in our riding gear smashing the beers etc until we ate. After dinners the bikes were moved around the back and we returned to the bar still in our ride gear until stumps
Last day later
February 2, 2012 at 10:09 am #214953Great ride report guys, please keep it coming. Its been great reading and has the 5 of us heading down there in 6 weeks keen as for our ride.
Couple of questions, TB I notice both you and Nick have gone back to the Std Low Front Guards, any particular reason?
And what tyres are you currently recommending?
I have run a Mitas E09 rear and got 6k out of it and loved the grip but hate the trying to get it on & off – tyre machine stuff only in my opinion. I have been running D606 fronts but am not a huge fan and would like to try something else – would appreciate your current thoughts.
I should have an update on my Tenere early next week – I am told the motor is being reassmebled today – the saga is now at 15 weeks.

The radiators fill with mud and block the centre strip of the core. If you get muddy conditions well you take the guard off for that section, the radiator would have filled with the high guard anyway. Also you dont get as much mud throw over onto the screen and the radiator is better protected from rocks and stonesAnd what tyres are you currently recommending?
Dunlop 952 fronts awesome wear and grip tall profile helps protect your rim as well (not road legal if that worries you)
Rears either a 606 great grip short life or a Mitas E09, good grip, good life. I have at home a Karoo to try and will do a write up.I should have an update on my Tenere early next week – I am told the motor is being reassmebled today – the saga is now at 15 weeks. Thats no good mate will be interested to hear

February 5, 2012 at 9:16 pm #214954Hi All,
I had a great trip but sorry guys I forgot me bloody camera !!!!.Thanks to the three amigo’s for leading us through some great trails and up some hills, which I thought would never end but hit the top with that big crusty dirt smile !! and what go’s up must come down!!!even better fun coming down the other side. The ride from Dargo to Jindabyne would have to be in my top five days Adventure riding it had everything, we hit the top of the Barrier hwy and TB said to Boulder and I you blokes have been sweep all week so away you go {enjoy} and that we did we raced all the way to the bottom stuffed up a few corners big skid marks just missing the 100 m drop offs so decided to slow down only to have Boulder trying to take me on the inside !! so back on the throttle again, great stuff the views riding into the snowy river I will never forget can’t wait to get down there again. My thoughts go out to Lance and his wife and I wish them all the best, hope to ride with him again one day.Steve the Wolfman OOOOWWWWW great riding with you mate,Glen and Andy hope you both got home safe boy’s looking forward to riding with you two also.Nick J the legend I followed him down some of those steep down hills,he made it look so easy untill he hit the bottom and then spent the next 30 minutes pulling his undies out his arse !! well done mate.Dee jay what a trooper the more I ride with you the more I like you maybe you can share our double bed next time !!!!!.TB mate, how you can find those tracks and make them all link up is beyond me,just one thing that worry’s me is you always go to bed early to watch movies and miss out on the bullshit around the camp fire !! what are these movies your looking at always lots of heavy breathing once the zip is closed.
Thanks again guys can’t wait for the next one {if I’m invited}
Cheers FishFebruary 5, 2012 at 10:06 pm #214955Great report guys and photos looks like a lot of fun cant wait to read the wright up in trailzone mags.

February 5, 2012 at 10:08 pm #215544OK Fish I will tell you the truth about early to bed sometimes. Note last night I didn’t go to bed early, well I take leading seriously and a dusty head doesn’t navigate as well. The most important reason is a dusty head doesn’t dodge cars, 4x4s and bikes as well as a non dusty person leading and f€#k having a head on in the middle of bum f$&k no where. Last night doesn’t matter eh almost home (Hampton, StAlburns) make sense  Sometimes I check maps and the mapping software this trip on my IPod helps linking all the tracks and then watch a movie like Just Go With It, the Hangover, the Hangover 2 etc
Glad you liked the ride and tracks mate, when are you coming to take the Ten for a ride?
TB
February 5, 2012 at 11:11 pm #215546So the last day, sorry about the gap between posts
We woke at Hampton, to be honest I felt a little seedy but not to to bad considering we had a few
We needed fuel badly, Nick’s BM had already borrowed fuel and my light had been on for some 60kms. Because of where I wanted to go the best place for fuel was Mt Lambie. The ride there was uneventful in the fog and mist. We fueled had a bacon and egg roll and headed of to Meadow Flat to turn up to Sunny Corner, then Dark Corner and onto the dirt proper. (there had been some dirt before Dark Corner but bugger all) we headed over through some over grown singles proper from the Sunny Corner rally off Lavis Lane much to Nick’s horror and DeJay had a little lay down in the clay ruts. We headed up through Turon State forest on a track Crash calls the poo track (cause it’s shit hot!!!) once at Mt Horrible we rode down the dirt to Palmers Oaky. Fish had lead all this while Nick and I swept. Once at Palmers Oaky I thought it better to go through Turon gates rather than the route used on the Capertee to Sunny Cnr birthday ride. The Capertee run is more fun we have done it a couple of times on the bigger bikes but the creek crossings may have been a issue with a the rain of late. Once we popped out on the Mudgee rd I took the boys down a little track near the railway line into Capertee from Running Stream. We sped through Capertee on the speed limit and jumped back on the railway service track to a single that delivered us up to the site of DeJays recent crash site. I walked Dejay through what we knew, cause he does stuff all about it still. It was a quiet time for Dejay as he tried to come to grips and struggled to remember what he could (which was nothing in the end) we shot down and into the Ben Bullen state forest. In here I missed a turn and we did a heap of unplanned but shit hot fun tracks. It was when punting through the undulated tracks that the BMW suspension just couldn’t cope as the rear shock lost the plot. The Ohlins on the Tenere was awesome (thanks Tekniks) and I soon found I had no one to talk to on the blue tooth. It was sandy, had windrows it was fun. We regrouped at Lidsdale and headed up the Black Fellows Hand Trail to Clarence. I poked the boys through a single and back out onto the dirt road to the Zig Zag

There wasnt much to report after that we rode home from there, the tracks I had in mind from Clarence to Bell were ruined by state rail working on their rail lines.

I enjoyed this ride no end it was a ripper, I was happy that Nicks bike turned out to be a pretty easy fix. Thanks to Steve for lending Nick the BMW, Jason Barrett for being Jason just a super laid back, helpful, nice bloke. Lance for making the effort to come along under trying circumstances, my thoughts are with you and your wife mate. To the Boulder boys, cheers guys as always (will help with your maintenance next time if you want, don’t give up we will get you through a ride one day without a breakdown, at least there wasn’t a flat this time
  ) nah seriously awesome as always guys. Dejay, man you ride that DR so well, why can’t you do the same on that orange shit wreck? Nick you took to that BM like a duck to water.
When are we doing it again?

Yeh, planning on 23rd – 26th of March – we are doing the soft option. Starting from a mates place at Jindabyne Fri morn then down to Dargo, renting a place from Dargo Dan for 3 nights so we can explore the area around dargo on Sat / Sun (without all the gear on the bikes), then back to Jindy on Mon.
So no camping on this trip.
Definitely doing the Haunted Stream track again and will follow it all the way this time and see what the rest of it is like. Can’t wait :woohoo:
