The famous CAT XR is not a happy camper…..
Last ride she was blowing some smoke but still going like a beauty. So yesterday we thought we would change the oil. Before dropping the oil, tripper and riderX started her to get the oil warm. I walked in the shed at the same time and upon hearing the strange noises coming from the top end I suggested that they may want to shut her down as it sounded as the top end was running dry.
Upon dropping the oil the problem became very obvious!! There was only about 100ml of oil in her!!!!!!! What a tractor!!! Do that with one of those fancy new engines and see how long it runs!!
Well, we put the correct amount of new oil in her (1.95 litres) and started her, (first kick) and the dry noise went away but there is a ticking noise from the top end and she is still blowing smoke.
So I am presuming we have to give her a rebuild, anyone know were the best place to get the big bore piston and rings and more than likely cam bearings?
Cant believe 100mls of oil in her and she was still rippin!!!!!!!!

Gotta love the old XR’s for that. My Uncle has a 600 and his son has two 280’s and they never fail them.

For info. the KTM XC4 engine will happily run on 100ml of oil (although this will inevitably reduce the life of the top end). Then again they only take 600ml to fill :)
