Below is my new Twin Air filter fitted on the cage of my xr250.

Is it best to leave that connecting foam “bar” between the two sides intact, or does it:-

    1) present a danger of being sucked into the carby? or

    2) interfere with the backfire screen?

If I remove it am I risking the filter working its way off perfect fitment?

    I`m no expert,,,
But I reckon it is there for a reason mate,,, so I`d leave it intact .
TwinAir know what they are doing & if it wasn`t needed, it wouldn`t be there (I think)

For what its worth on my old XR400 I cut that bit off..

The stock filter doesnt have a bar like this.

AND it copped a slight nick in fitting to the cage – I’m afraid its going to tear and work loose.

I was unsure about that when puting the same filter on my xr250. i thought
to myself it must be there for a reason and theres no instruction
saying to cut it away so i left it. but i dont think it
Would make a difference if it was cut away..

Leave it, its there for a reason and that is to stop the side filter foam being squeezing out when clamped. It wont get sucked in and I have seen a XR dusted because someone cut it out.

Thanks TB – incisive as usual.

My 2008 Fe 450e Husaberg has a similar filter and your are right as usual TB.

The center panel on the foam filter is to hold it into shape so as when it clamps down the sides of the foam remain in shape and clamp correctly. When you clean the filter and oil it it needs to dry , the centre foam piece allows it to dry and hold it’s original shape.
Really enjoyed the Newey to Wisemans ride , thanks to all, great bunch of guys.

That airfilter set up is the same as the XR600 that I had and I always left the foam section in it. It does make it a bugger to fit the wire screen but as TB said it is there so as the filter holds its shape. I also had a filter that had a nick in it from fitting the screen. It lasted for the whole life of the filter with no dramas ,actually I bet that filter is still in the bike today.

    Hope that helps

Yes Mick it sure does help.
(as I’m sure the other two posts you made and deleted did)
