I did note the carbie is the smaller 36mm version. I also see some have a 39mm carbie fitted or the standard one modded with varying results.

I wasn’t aware the top end suffers any less than a comparable 300cc smoker? The Gasser certainly doesn’t have any more legs, I don’t *think* the TM does from what I have heard/seen, maybe the Husky does?

Or do you just mean go at the top end, power being similar and all?

Yep Moto “GO” at the topend, I rode a few late model KTM300s with the 36mm keihin and their topend is flatter than the old models, it’s not just a transition thing either, as I’ve seen them side by side too, rather been on them side by side.
The GasGas is way softer through Timing and compression to start with, the TMs drfinitely have more uppermid-range/topend when poked with a stick, the Husky 250 the same (can’t speak for the 300 yet) and the SX250s from KTMs own stable. There are other factors here, but without a 38mm or better throat size, it’s a moot exercise.
It’s a relatively easy fix tho’ the carb body is the same and it just needs a bore and a few other things to be up to the powerplants capabilities.

It’s like your old Trials bike; tiny carb= lower end torque and easier to jet, get running crisp in the low to mid revs.

Yes, it’s why the KTM is revered to have the torquiest of the 300 engines, more helpful in a enduro bike unless you are desert racing, I don’t know many situations where you hold a 300 pinned for any sustainable period of time except in a desert race.

The Husky’s are supposed to have great legs up top, wouldn’t mind a burn of one for comparison.

The SX’s will be different for obvious reasons though.

ive also heared of dudes putting the KTM SXS head on their 300 to give a better top end.

    but who needs it. :P

I tend to agree with you both, (even tho’ I no longer am part of the 300 church) the strength of the 300exc engine is it’s torque, the revered “3 Stroke” tag given to them. They’re never going to out torque a 525/530, but it’s not what it’s about, contrastly they’re never going to wind up as quick as an SX250 or any other 250 MXer, but again, not what they’re about. They are a great “everyday” hi-performance do anything powerplant, trundle up a steep hill just off idle, or pulling great long wheelies along a firetrail, whilst giving the 450s a shake up. All the while being reliable, light and forgiving.

But they will still get SPOOGE after a while.

I replace my packing for the race bikes around twice to three times a year at least, Power suffers otherwise. They come out nearly full of spooge.
