I got some new tyres before the Coffs ride and thought I’d let you all know how good I reckon they are.
Dunlop Geomax MX51 front and rear, 90/100 front and 110/100 rear
Everyone at Coffs knows how wet it was on the weekend and these tyres seemed to get grip everywhere, they are only a mid compound so not a mud specialist tyre, the larger 90/100 front seemed to make the front end grip in corners better and with the higher profile float over trail trash like sticks and rocks. I am a large human and often feel the front rim hitting rocks through the tyre with this front it didn’t happen.
I dropped the forks about 5mm in the triple clamps for this ride too and coupled with the new tyres it was turning like it was on rails.
The rear got plenty of grip for the slick hill climbs and slippery logs (or maybe that was just my supreme riding talent    )
The next test for these tyres will be to give them a flogging in the long, fast, rocky hills at Bobs place and see if the side knobs don’t snap off.
Torpedo 7 has these on special for $79 front and $85 rear, I just got a couple more rears and a front, don’t think they will last long at that price.
ps. my bike is a 450 Berg
December 10, 2011 at 12:36 pm #212999i love those tyres lc but they don t last that well but who cares in my opionion one of the best tyres i have used .have not tryed them on the 300 yet the 530 trashed tyres anyway
December 10, 2011 at 1:07 pm #213000I have done 800 k`s of varied terrain with my geomax and they are still going strong.
December 10, 2011 at 1:59 pm #213002Sound like the go if they grip in that slimy red stuff up there!!! Might give some a try.
Only thing that worries me was the last Dunlop front tyre I had tore most of the knobs off in about 800km. Let us know how they go in the rocks LC4skin.December 10, 2011 at 2:40 pm #213003I used nothing but Geomax until this year and I really rate them too , I used to get about 10 70-90km rides out of them and they would grip down to the very end !

I find they are the best gripping tyre I’ve used when new but once worn a bit the grip drops right off.
I unfortunately tried the mx71 thinking maybe the grip will be the same and they will last longer being the hard terrain tyre. No grip at all, especially if wet. It’s that bad I have a new mx71 in the shed and I will never put it on. Anybody’s for a carton of beer or even half a carton.

How about a hot VB twist top ?
I have a mate up here who tried the Hard tyre and said the same !
The grip of these tyres after some use must vary a lot with terrain I found last year in Coffs I did a ride with STM before the main ride and had a very well used tyre and it was fine in the very wet loam we were riding ?
