just wondering what tyres to run at the 4day will have to run different ones to what i normaly run due to rocks thinking bridgstones because they are easy to change and grip okay not sure which one .normaly run michelin m12 front and kenda carlsbad back they are hard to fit and don t last in the rocks but good at dubbo.do they have to be highway aproved to pass scrutinering also don t want to do a tyre change so they have to last
February 25, 2009 at 7:36 am #123788G’day rocket,
I’d be running a Mitchy Starcross front with a Moose tube to avoid punctures in all that rocky terrain!. And a Pirelli Scorpion on the rear with a Mitchy heavy duty rear 4mm inner tube. The Starcross is a harder version of the M12, it may chip a few knobs here and there, but it will wear well. The Pirelli rear wears well too!
CrashFebruary 25, 2009 at 8:22 am #123789My only advice would be to get rid of the carlsbad, they are a crap tyre in any sort of rock at all. Drop in to Matthews and see about a Maxxis IT, you’ll never get a Crapsbad again!
February 25, 2009 at 9:06 am #123796hay crash how well do moose tubes handle the tar sometimes we do 15klm to get to one of our tracks.TB had them in on the hillend ride i think with no problems .i got a soft spot for mitchy front tyres think i will have a look at the starcross front
February 25, 2009 at 9:41 am #123800Front Moose will be fine. Have run them in the Condo 750 and had to do approx. 250 kms or more on tar over 2 days. The Pirelli has done over 1200 kms on the back of the 650 and is due for changing soon.

February 25, 2009 at 9:52 am #123801sounds like a good choice of tyres prably have to order them being in dubbo they don t stock much. how much is a front moose worth and how long would it last if i get one will run it all the time hate flats
February 25, 2009 at 10:55 am #123802I run my front moose for 12mths much to TB’s disgust with out pulling it out and relubing it, it suffered in the end, but no flats. Buy one its money well spent.
February 25, 2009 at 2:04 pm #123808To start off with, they’re pretty expensive – probably around $190ish!
Should last over 12 months or so, depending upon how much you ride. It will then seem to be getting softer. You then buy your second one. After another year or so of flat free riding, the second one will seem to get flatter. It is at this point, you start to get a further benefit by being able to cut a segment from your first one. You use this to pack out your second one! So basically, the purchase of x2 tubes over a couple of years should get you well over 3 years of flat free riding.
CrashFebruary 25, 2009 at 7:57 pm #123814Yeah I agree with Crash regarding the tyres, the Pirelli Scorpion on the rear will go good up there as there are some really rocky crap out at Mullion state forest, the pirelli is also slightly taller in its profile which helps prevent pinch flats when you slam a step up or sharp edge.
A front mousse will prevent front flats and dented rims (which lead to broken and loose spokes and more tube issues if you have tubes) and will more that handle any speed heat related issues you are worried about.
The front starcross will work with a mousse, I have been trying a retread, my only criticism is the tall knobs flex on hard pack and it can be pretty of putting (I noted that ADB said the same) so because of that and with running a mousse I would run a starcrossScott may still have some Pirelli Scorpions, Moto has fitted one on my recommendation and is happy with it, they grip well and wear good enough for the whole 4 days for sure. I have tried all sorts of tyres and used Maxis at the 4 day because they supported our ride, they did the job but I feel the Pirelli is much better. I have tried a retread rear lately but it is worn out, has only done 340kms (125kms of that in the rain and mud) and doesn’t offer enough grip to justify the cheap price in my opinion, if I was doing another 4 day I would run S12 Michelin rears with a mousse and change it day 2 work period. Soft option Pirelli Scorpion for the 4 days.
Give me a ring for anything 4 day related mate will PM my number

February 25, 2009 at 8:12 pm #123817Hey TB what can I expect to pay for a Pirelli scorpion for the BRP??
February 25, 2009 at 8:24 pm #123819Around the $120 I would say, sorry Rocket you need to ring 02 95435133 and ask for fathead, tell him track bolt told you to ring and price the tyre.
Mines done over 1200kms the longest servicing tyre to date on the fiddy by at least 300kms

AnonymousRocket – I agree with TB 100% on th tyre selection. I put 250K’s on the Pirelli Scorpion at the weekend (with about 40K’s tar) and we hit some pretty rocky sections ata decent pace. The tyure has held up extremely well and provided heaps of dgrip on all terrains (much to my surprise).
I think if you wanted low maintenence the Scoprion will do the whole 4 days and let you worry about sorting other things out. If you want the best outright tyre for 100% grip I’d be using the S12 and change after day 2
I haven’t used the mousse’s but would consider doing so if I were racing the 4 day, bugger changing a flat halfway through the ride.
February 26, 2009 at 12:23 am #123797highway approved not required Rocket
February 26, 2009 at 12:41 am #123860Can you get me one of the Scorpions for the March ride? Does Fathead have them?
Tell how to pay etc.February 26, 2009 at 12:47 am #123861Ring Fathead, pay by credit card and I will get crash to pick it up tomorrow and he can give it to me when he drops his bike of, and for an alloy throttle tube I will bring it up to you
When you ring Mrs Fathead will answer Fatheads sic (fully sic), tell her your an Old Bull and that you are the one they call Devon head and that fathead told you to ring and ask for mrs fathead and to look after you! Shes great value
