fellas, im wondering what tyres everybody uses or would like to use. ive seen S12’s, pirelli scorpions, dunlops etc on the forum.

my Kato came with metzeler ‘6 day extreme’s’.

i dont think they are much chop. ive only dome about 400k’s on her, the rear is pretty much r**ted, and the front is also fairly rounded.

a mate of mine swears by Trelleborg’s but they are hard to source. anyone used them…..

also, whos used a trial tyre on the rear. they seem to be getting more popular, im not sure why?

    menace the ignoramus….

What sort of conditions do you ride in normally ?

I ride Clarence and the Watagans. I love the IRC M5B for the rear. The front I use an Michelin S12. I find it works well.. (The front I may try a different one next time)

I started with a near new Maxxis rear, not sure which one, It outlasted mates Kenda ‘carlsbads’ 3 to 1 although he does have a CRF450X which has been written up as a bike you need shares in a tyre factory to ride:ohmy:. Lucky for him he is a tyre rep;). I have now got a Mitas c-09??( got the flu so can’t be bothered walking to shed to verify – is a Mitas though:laugh: )and its had one ride and already has a knob (no not me:blink: )ripped clean off and looks a little worse for wear, but in saying that it was taken up some rock and root infested hills that would put any tyre to the test. Same day had 3 bikes with 3 new tyres, my Mitas, a bridgestone and a Kenda ‘budds creek’ all seemed to handle the terrain much the same although no idea what others looked like after ride, didn’t look that hard. Still have Maxxis front but will end up on Kenda’s front and rear eventually as the price is right:silly: .

After riding lots of slippery hard pack/loose surface today I like the Pirelli Scorpion less. I didn’t ride enough of this stuff to notice last week. It goes well on rocks and and just about everything else though and the wear seems to be pretty damn good. It just kept washing/wanting to wash out today though.

I have never fallen off from completely losing the back end and sliding along on my arse. I did it 3.5 times today! You can hang it out but sometimes it just lets go and I was checking the track out with my a-hole.

The S12 is still the best tyre I’ve used but they do wear quickly. The other thing to note is that I have had my suspension (front and rear) changed recently and so can’t compare how the S12 goes with the current setup.

I have an S12 on the front and it’s getting bit ordinary now after 1500K’s. Great tyre though. I think the M12’s will be my next tyre.

I wouldn’t even try those Carlsabad’s form what I’ve seen heard from other riders.

Why is that, wear and tear or handling?

hay sirdropalot i would not put a carlsbad tyre on the front put one on my last bike wr400 gave it head shake made the front ride rougher than let tyre presser down lower to get it to handle and got dinted rims did not grip very well either .thought i would put up with it untill it wore out but it lasted realy well so just took it of and got another mitchelin.don t mind the kendas on the back if they are cheap grip okay last alright if not in rocks herd the buds creek ones are better than carlsbad but have not tryed one (buds creek)due to cheap supply drying up

My mate has a Washougal (Kenda) on the back and he goes pretty good with it. It has lasted ages as well.

The Carlsabad was bad for grip and was tearing knobs off on tight rocky stuff. Don’t now about the front, this is the rear I’m talking about.

If you want good grip and wear combo I reckon the M12 on the front and a Pirelli Scorpion are good choices. I’ll have a play with the settings on my suspension to see if it helps the grip:)

*edit 1:- Hmm will try posting something this time:blush: . Thanks for the heads up white rocket……..as you can see have ridden enough to have had a whole 2 rears:woohoo: so all learning for me. I am sure as a young bloke I would have had tyres that had no tread at all so no recalling from back then;). Mate is being official tester for all the Kenda’s and he did think budds creek went better than carlsbad, but like me a newbie so not a lot of different tyres tested yet.

*edit 2:- Woo hoo my favourite number post:woohoo:

Having ridden alot out where you rode today and just spoken with Champo I wouldnt blame the tyre that much, the best thing that works out there is throttle control, because there is not traction out there Moto done at all

Tyres are simple, soft gives traction but wears out quick, hard wears slow but offers not traction.

Small blocks pearce the surface and give bite, big dont, small wear fast big done

You get what you pay for, and no two people agree on the same things as different bikes and different styles give different results :P

    I get a monthly newsletter from Ktm.com.

in the last one I recieved they where talking about the new S12/M12’s.
Apparently they are to be the same tread pattern, but with a more durable compound.
Hav’nt seen any other mention of this, just thought the guys that like them would be interested.

As for tyres I use either a Dunlop 952 or Bridgy 602 for the rear and 952 or bridgy 401 for the front
    ride mostly watties.

btw i dont think they are making Carlsbads anymore, just looking on the Kenda website and they are not on there.

I ride a DRZ 400 has the origonal tyres fitted. I sometimes ride during the week on bitumen to go to post office, bank etc. What tyre would anyone recommend here maybe %15 bitumen %85 dirt.

Only Bridgestones for me. ED16 front ED12 rear. Have tried different brands but like the Bridgestones the best.

Kylie has a Michelin something on the rear that seems to be lasting pretty good.

Stay away from the cheap and nasty Fortunes (as Champo would agree with) they are just CRAP, but you get what you pay for I suppose.
