Well, maybe I have put this thread in the wrong forum so if so feel free to move it, but the question is bike related.

Just wondering who has and/or uses UHF radios when riding?

Or more specifically, who carries one for those moments and times when help is needed?

Looking at getting one but have no idea whatsoever as to the best type that suits the bike use to which it will be put.

Any/all talk on the subject appreciated

And to try to make it bike related, can you handlebar mount one?

i wouldnt mind getting my hands on a little 2 way also garry. 5 watt would be good for distance but but bilky and expensive. i dont know much about them, but definately would be a good idea on the trail. Have a look in outdoor mags, there is a little device called SPOT i think?! its like an epirb type thingy, but family/friends can track your progress via satellite, and has a bunch of features. Might be worth a look, just a thought.

Have done some research on SPOT and know of at least one person who has it and yes it is very good in many regards (such as tracking your location etc), may even go this way yet to be honest.

Just thought I woudl ask about the UHF side though as they are a good safety item in that you can call for assistance which may not constitute a SPOT emergency whereby the emergency services woudl be called abd/or a search initiated (ie. should you have a mechanical as opposed to an accident).

May even end up with both yet, but first I need to find money

good point. i carry my mobile phone with me, not ideal i know, but can often get service on top of a hill, not deep in the bush obviously, but keeps piece of mind at watagans at least!

If you get some more info, feel free to pass it along as i like all the little gadgetry that comes with adventure riding!!

I use UHF radio’s when I am riding so I can communicate with my mate. The speaker and ear pieces are velcroed into our helmets with the push to talk button mounted on our handle bars and the UHF is just kept in our pants or jacket pocket.

Link for info. They are based in NZ so with the dollar you might get a good price.

Have a look at this thread guys. It has some info and peopels thoughts on a couple of units. It also has a link to another older thread on the same subject :)

I have been on 2 rides where the lead and sweep used radios. On both rides there was a point in time when the two needed to communicate (breakdowns) and on both occassions the radio were out of range or didn’t work beacuse of the hills.

I’m not saying they are a bad thing, just for me, I’d rather a new chain and sprocket set :P
