Used KTM’s?

Sorry gang, just chasing a bit more info on these Austrian beasts. I know I should really stick to the WR’s or DRZ’s Jappas, but for some reason I keep looking at these bloody KTM’s! :ohmy:

Now is it the case as with many USED European cars, thats you generally stay clear of them? That if you can’t afford NEW, then don’t bother? The cost of spares and reliability issues of such vehicles 5 years or older usually make then a bit of a nightmare, but I just have no idea with European bikes :blush:

Your right about the cost of spares Squizzy, if it comes in a KTM package, you will pay through the nose for it. Whether or not the second hand jobs will give you trouble though I couldn’t say. I guess it is like anything though, if you treat it right and maintain it well it should be fine but what has the previous owner done.

I bought an 05 KTM450EXC a couple of years ago.
I still have it and probably will for some time to come.
When i bought it it had 6,000 ks on it and it was in good condition.
I give it filters and oil at regular intervals and check the valve clearances every 12 months.
I don’t ride it every weekend probably once a month and it has served me very well.
Yes KTM parts are expensive but then again so are most genuine spares.
I get all my parts at Suttos and get a good deal through the Old Bulls discount.
You can get after market parts off the net and save some money but i find with freight it comes out about the same.
The reason i bought the KTM was that it came with all the right gear already fitted and didn’t require performance add ons to make it handle, stop or go.
Also the 450 has the power to drag my sorry arse up large hills.:laugh:
I don’t think the KTMs need any more maintenance or cost any more to run than any other bike.

Thanks for that quality bit of info Rebore, I argee entirely about how its been treated and maintained from new. And many thanks for your experiential insights shared.

In regards valve clearances, are they JUST OHV shim and bucket? Can you replace cam chain without splittin crankcase?

Am guessing like most, its regular oil changes, oil and air filter changes, pads, sprockets, chains, plugs etc etc? Piston, rings, head shim, valves and rebore are not that regular.. are they?

yep you can replace the cam chain without spliting the cases just need a flywheel puller to remove flywheel get 08 or newer they feel handle go better than the older ones and try to avoid the 250f ones .as usual try and get a bike that has done little work

I bought my first KTM in 2003 mainly because it was something different (not many out there at that time)
Now they are like a rash, everyone owns one.
On our rides there is always more Kato’s than any other brand
That must say something.
Just sold my 07 525 with almost 16000kms on the clock
No rebuild, just very keen maintainance
Have my third Kato now
Its a 500 and I’m still getting the suspension set but I’m happy with it so far

Hello Squizzy,
My valves are adjustable although i have grown out of adjusting valves and replacing cam chains.
Mine has not had a cam chain replaced yet.
I cannot tell you if the 08 and later models handle better than the 05 but of course they are more refined the younger they are it depends on your budget.
As you say just regular filters, oil, brake pads, chains, sprockets and tires no different from any other bike.

There are quite a few KTMs in the OBs but what you generally see is a minority with “orange envy” butting in on these threads. :laugh:

08 and newer katos are a better chassis no question. Unlike Wrocket im not fanatical about the newer motors. Like to see 16,000km on original top end like Murphs RFS! Id pick an 07 RFS or 10 RC4.

I got my 07 450 because it was the last of the old motor, so all issues sorted. bought with 1800kms and now has 11000kms and no rebuilds, valves or other issues. Valves are easy to check and adjust-not bucket/shim but the other ones(don’t know what they are called) 1/2 hour job to adjust. I have no desire to change-very happy

I have a ktm 250 exc f 07 model and am very happy with it.. i bought it brand new, like the other lads have said regulary do filters and oils
