It never ends…
Decided to check the valve clearances while I had the Vor apart for a clean, poor old thing didn’t like to start on the magic button and I expected that the ex valves weren’t opening enough.
Well it seems the clearances have closed up, which means the valve have recessed?
So I took the shims out and put them in nice little bags which were labelled.
Now that they are out, is it suitable to measure the distance between the rocker arms and the top of the valve stem, subtract the distance I want for clearance and this will give me the required shim size? Or do I have to put the shims back in and take measurements then?
Having looked at it now I suspect that I might have to take the head off and have a look at the valves  , I take it shims come in pretty much any size?
At what point does one say, “Nup that’s it, the valves need replacing old son!”

I have not been inside the Vor before but they are all similar enough to give some little input to you,
Clearances closing….yes valves recessed or stems stretchedAs far as shims in or out , some do it both ways to get the measurements and I am not sure how yours is done, Sorry Mate:(
At what point does one say thats it…well…Mine was a ways past taking apart and I ignored it(no money) and in the end it Won, it died gracefully and recessed so far I had no more adjustment(KTM have adjusters not shims)and the Baby would not start, So I guess that enough was enough. I would not let it get that far if I could have afforded it, , The thing will use oil and even after adjustments of shims it wont start easily.
Good Luck Mate:)

If your valve clearances close up enough to where the bike will not start or has difficulty in starting, you may have already done damage to your engine. If for example the required spec’s are .008″ clearance and you only have 002″ clearance, the bike will start but when it warms up to operating temp the metal will expand from the heat and the .002″ will close up to the point when the valve is never fully seated. This is one cause in difficulty in starting. Possibly not as you suggested, the valve not opening far enough. Running an engine like this will eventually result in the head of the valve breaking off.

I’m just researching how to check the valves on my 07 250excf and the repair manual doesn’t really help much but it does mention the use of shims for adjustment. Is there a better ‘how to’for checking the valve clearances than the repair manual?
July 16, 2009 at 6:04 am #144007Im with Blue 450 but what is the clearance and how many times have the shims been swaped for thinner ones to make a call on valve recession
Yes you need to measure first then workout your ajustment to thickness

I think its in the KTM tech help

Although this vid is not for your Kato, the concept is the same.
July 16, 2009 at 6:36 am #144010Shane do you have the clearances written down that they were before you pulled it apart? You have each shim for each valve in its own bag I gather?
Now the first question that should have been asked do you know how many times before the valves have required shimming?
You have owned it since new the bike, how many time have the valves been done before?
If never then a re shim and it will be fine
You home tomorrow I will call around during the day and have a chat
I have mics and the gear to measure the shims so we can order the correct thickness shims
Standard call out fee but

July 16, 2009 at 6:44 am #144011Thanks for the offer bull!
Sorry, what’s the ktm tech help?
This is what it says in the repair manual:
Checking the valve clearance
– Use the feelø gauge 590.29.041.000 to measure the valve
clearance:
lntake valves 0.10 – 0.20 mm
Exhaust valves 0.12 – O.22 mm
– Wite down any dcviations from the specified valve clearance,
remove the camshafts and measure the thickness of the installed
shims. lf the measured valve clearance is too small, use thinner
shims; if the valve clearance is too large, install thicker shims.
Shims are available in thicknesses of 1.72 to 2.60 mm in
graduations of 0.04 mm.
– Check the valve clearance again after asscmbly and correct again if
necessary,
– Unscrew the engine locking screw, remount with the CU-seal ring
and tighten to 20 Nm.I think I’m hijacking so I might just start another thread.
July 16, 2009 at 7:01 am #144013No dramas with this hijack, it’s all the same topic and one never knows when I’ll swing my leg over a pumpkin!!!!!
Sounds like an idea TB. I was gonna wait till I got to work to measure the shims but a house call sounds like the goods! Yes, aware of the usual call out fee!
and I’ll be home all day! You’ll probably end up saving me pulling the head off during my holidays and mowing the bloody lawns instead! (Missus’ll love that!!!)
I’m about 99% sure the valves hadn’t been done before…but my memory is weak…
July 16, 2009 at 7:05 am #144017If the valves haven’t been done before or even once before they will be able to be adjusted for sure. Don’t worry about all the head of, valve failure talk it will be all good
