Hey all noticed last ride a bit of a knocking noise from engine, I assume it is the valves need doing, bike has 1050kms on it, checked at 500 were within spec, any advice on doing these yourself is it a hard task or simple?

    Cheers
    Chris.

Checking the valves is easy if you use the workshop manual. TB’s offer of the help and a few beers sound the go though. What you could learn by watching would be heaps quicker than reading about it. By the way you havent recently fitted an alloy bash plate on that bike as that deflects the sound of the engine. I have seen heaps of people who have fitted plates and have commented about it. Might be way off but it was worth a try.

i’m with aaron, maybe drop the bash plate off and take it for a spin up the road, and see if there is a difference in the noise.

as my 640 was the same, when i first bought it. the shop did not have a plate on hand, they posted it to me. it deflected so much engine noise i got worried

TB’s foam under the bashplate is a two fold purpose, 1: to stop the mud, dirt and stones from getting in there and 2: to dampen the noise deflection/ amplification.

would i be correct in saying that valves that need checking, would sound more like pinging than a knocking sound??

It has a plastic bash plate ;) So we can rule that out. After a phone call with Chris this morning (business and OBT runnings) we did some questions and answers, I am now inclined towards and exhaust leak at the header cylinder head joint. Why? Well because its a ticking noise that was only there when cold, when the engine heats up it goes quiet. As the thinner material header pipe heats fast the rapidly expanding pipe seals the leak until its cold next time. Well that’s what I have worked out without looking at it. Loose header flange bolts / nuts maybe

don t forget the cam chain tensioners on those bikes are not very good and cause rattles at idle if its not a muffler leak.cafe racer ones work

Will check it with Chris on saturday arvo guys but my understanding is that there was a noise when it was cold, the noise went away when the engine warmed up and never returned. Its only when cold at all rpms Temperature wont quieten a loose chain

Did KTM fix the cam chain tensioner issue with the 530’s cause you dont hear about it anymore? Was it mainly 530’s because I dont remember hearing of any others beside Ants and Rockets? (although my memory is not that good )

I was basing my opinion on Ant’s 530. It rattled when it was cold but stopped once warm,(this started at about 40hrs). I just wound out the cam chain tensioner untill I heard an audible “click” then wound it back in to the same place and all was good and it hasn’t rattled since. It had something to do with the size of the teeth on the ratchet set up in the tensioner. Apparently the later models were to have bigger teeth to eleviate the problem, although I haven’t confirmed the fact.

Thanks that explains it. As its a later model it shouldnt be that but who knows, Chris explained it when we spoke as a tick should have an answer on Saturday arvo will check it all out ;)

Forgive me if i’m wrong but isn’t this bike only about 8 months old and KTM have a 12 month warranty? If it’s making engine noises at 1050km I’d be taking it straight back to the dealer to get it sorted.
