Good post AB, well thought out and honest
I was taught and my view is to go to the last place that you saw someone or you know someone saw you and wait. Yes I know fuel etc can be a worry but that’s what I was taught and expect someone to do. I will also include it in my briefings from now on.
May I also add ride VERY CAREFULLY back to the last place, not tear arse in case they are looking for you. If you are waiting at the last place you were seen it narrows down the search area for the searchers as they only have to search where they have been and reduces the chances of you becoming MORE LOST by trying to find your way back to the camp / cars.
When found by the group the fuel issue can be a group problem rather then a lost soul trying to find his or her way back ran out of fuel on their ownJust my 3 cents worth

February 22, 2010 at 11:57 pm #171668Nah I reckon that’s right. As I said you need to be prepared and by talking this stuff through before you go out and sit on your bike all pumped for a wicked group ride it gives it a better chance to become entrained in your reaction process.
I tell you what I’m no martyr but sheeez have I had some situations in the bush! I’m lucky in that they’ve all ended as well as they could have but crikey noone will be game to ride with me with this reputation!
February 23, 2010 at 12:30 am #171625Id have no problem riding with ya Austblue and I dont think anyone else would have a problem either.
Did the lead rider not see you pass, therefore not tell the next rider to stay put, and then chase you down?
February 23, 2010 at 12:32 am #171671Yeah there is no problem riding with ya for sure AB especially as the TM did two non stop days
Its all good

February 23, 2010 at 12:32 am #171672It seems he didn’t and I’m not completely surprised because if I’m guessing correctly he was doing his best to cross a gnarly river and probably didn’t notice me. That’s all I can put it down to really.

The day my KTM got towed out of the bush was my first 2 day riding weekend and I was thinking to myself “how good is this I’m surprised I was fit enough to do this and what a great weekend of riding this has been” and then my bike stopped. No bs, before realising I was separated I was thinking to myself “what another great weekend of riding, oh wait don’t say that last time you did it all ended in tears.” Then not 10minutes later I realised I was lost. Damn well jinxed myself!
February 23, 2010 at 1:49 am #171674AB, you live and learn.
I don’t believe in jinxing or astrology, just reality and fact.
I am happy the day turned out as well as it did but I think I should have camped Sat. night and been there on Sunday.I like the idea of Orange vest = leader, green vest = sweep.
Can anyone swap me a green one?
I have 3 orange ones but no green. WTF?
Eagle?February 23, 2010 at 2:13 am #171626Just so happens I do have a couple of green ones I have had for years mate
Can do a swap next time we meet for sure, or would you like me to post ya one I you post me an orange one ???That would maybe be quicker if you want one in a hurry or anything.
Pm me your address mate & I will sort it out
February 23, 2010 at 2:18 am #171678Done deal Eags, bring me one for the next ride will be fine mate
February 23, 2010 at 2:25 am #171680I was thinking it’d be a good way of promoting old bulls, that is get some vests made up with the name on there and “leader” or “sweep” if you like. I’d be happy to chip in as a token of my appreciation for the search party as well as all the other good work that others do and I benefit from.

I will just run my rides as I have the old fashioned cranky way

February 23, 2010 at 2:48 am #171683Having been a “lost soul” not 3 months ago in the pouring rain in a huge group of three, I empathise with you AB, on the vest idea, the buggers are ony around $7-$10 and a simple LARGE L or S in heavy black marker should do the trick methinks. Here at work I have just issued all my supervsiors with new vests with a big SUPERVISOR on the back, did joke about maybe a target as well, so when contractors or the public wish to make an enquiry it is easy to identify the right person, and that is what you want here, maybe a big “TRAILBOSS” for Greg would be suitable though……….
And it sux getting lost as it’s getting darker and you’re cold and worried about fuel and if the boys are nipping around looking for you and which way they’re headed, last time though the buggers just stayed at the utes and waited for me to backtrack and as TB said last known sighting, then follow the fresh tracks.

February 23, 2010 at 2:52 am #171684Part of the beauty of it I thought was that people you come across would not only see the group of riders with shit eating grins and/or tears were all from OBT and also that they were on a well organised group ride not just a bunch of mugs.
I recognise it’s a challenge to get them to rides but I think it’d be up to individuals – if they want to have them on their rides they should be willing to pay the small fee to have a set in their kit bag and they can supply them to whoever is sweeping/leading for the day. It might be that on one ride 8 blokes have vests each but that won’t matter obviously.
I’ve never had to pay for a vest but I can’t imagine they’d charge much if you were buying say 30 of each colour and then a few bucks per letter for the OBT etc and I reckon $40 would be plenty. Of course that’s straight out of my posterior though but if that’s the case then even if you never lead people should be willing to contribute for the sake of those that do lead them and for their own effort towards keeping them safer. As for sweeping, well everyone should have a go at this, perhaps not if you’re a noob but eventually you need to pull your weight.
I’m about to duck out but when I return I’ll see if I can chase up some information.
In the mean time would any of you be interested in paying that sort of money to have them in your kit for a ride?
Cheers.
February 23, 2010 at 2:57 am #171685Sure I give up  , I will purchase a sweep one for my rides, and a photographer one as well, no lead but, I and my jersey will be enough
