G’day OldBulls, I found this on my works home page this morning. FYI
02 Aug 2011
A man will appear in court on a firearms charge after a joint operation involving Forests NSW, Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) and NSW Police in the Hunter.
The blitz last weekend resulted in 39 breaches which attracted 23 penalty infringement notices, 11 unregistered and unlicensed drivers being turned away from the forests, four intelligence reports lodged and the firearms charge where a court attendance notice was issued.
Community partnership forester for Forests NSW Central Region Mike Hill said the operation targeted the Watagan National Park and Watagan, Olney, Heaton, Awaba, Ourimbah and Wyong State forests and Jilliby State Conservation Area.
“The joint operation involved police from the Lake Macquarie and Upper Hunter Local Area Commands, and staff from Forests NSW and the OEH, with marked highway patrol cars, four-wheel-drive patrol wagons, trail bikes and other four-wheel-drive vehicles all involved,” Mr Hill said.
“The operation was specifically aimed at curbing illegal trail bike riding and antisocial behaviour in the Watagan and Ourimbah areas.”
About 40 motorcycle riders were spoken to by police and their bikes examined for compliance.
“The message is simple: illegal motorcycle riding is not permitted in State forests or national parks,” Mr Hill said.
“No licence, no rego, no ride. When riding motor bikes in State forests and national parks, stay to formed roads. The rules are just the same as if you are riding on any public streets.
“Forests NSW, OEH and the police have cooperated for some time on trying to spread this message and have held previous joint operations which will continue without warning in these problem areas.
“The firearms charge followed a person discharging a high powered firearm in a State forest.
“It appears this is an isolated incident with police controlling the situation.”
Mr Hill said there may be other charges pending further police investigations.

August 2, 2011 at 1:17 pm #206003Interesting topic this one. I know that OBT don’t condone the use of unregistered bikes however, when a ride is advertised, what lengths if any does the ride organiser go to to insure that all atending bikes are in fact registered. I say this as it could have been an OBT outing at the Watigans when this sting accurred and it would not have been a good look if some of our members were in fact not regoed I myself have my rego plate and sticker clearly displayed.
My 2 Bobs worth.

August 2, 2011 at 1:23 pm #206018I would as a ride organiser turn away an unregoed bike on the day and couldnt give a rats arse how much they carried on. But I dont check regos if a bike looks regoed and has a plate and light etc what can you do really we arent the police or rangers we can only been seen as doing the right thing not so much enforce it.
I have seen motocrossers ripping around the bush in the Watos with a quad like gooses, half an hour later saw two DR400s with coppers on board and stopped them to tell them where the peckers heads were. That was pre Old Bull days and would do it again in a heart beat.

The thread on DBW about this says the police were just happy that they could prove rego and license. Most of the time they understand what trail riding is.
Good on them I reckon.
I would like to see a blitz like that at Clarence and fine most of the knobs.

August 2, 2011 at 2:29 pm #206005I also think that in some cases, the age of the rider comes into this as well. There are alot of let’s say 16 – 17 year olds out there that are unable to either obtain a licsence or rego a bike for that matter. Having said that, I would have thought that the older more responsible riders should know better. Maybe these shit heads don’t give a shit about the law let alone us folk that are doing the right thing. The actions of these pricks I believe, will stuff it up eventually for all.
BTW. BURN THERE F%$KEN BIKES

We may have rego but it’s a bit hypocritical getting on our high horse about it when you are breaking the law as soon as you touch some single trail. I’m also guessing that means that if you injure yourself (or worse somebody else) when not on a formed then your CTP and comprehensive insurance is null and void. Hadn’t thought of that before either.
