AnonymousFor those priviledged few that own a mighty WR450F, what gearing do you run? Back in the days when I did actually ride my bike:blush: , I ran 14/52 gearing. This is because I did mainly slow twisty rocky stuff out at Menai, and very seldom even got into top gear.
As I can see myself eventually riding with you guys at the Wattagans, what can you recomend that works well there. In my collection I have 13,14,15 fronts and 50,51,52 rears, hence I have a combination to play with.
Regarding your current gearing for the Watties, are you happy with it, or would you consider changing it?
Owners of other shitbox brand bikes need not reply to this postB) . You shouldn’t even be reading this particular forum anyway, unless of course you have a dream to someday own a legendary Yamaha motorcycle. Even Rossi saw the light and made the jump to the superior make.

Nigel
October 18, 2008 at 8:44 am #109626Gyday Nigel, The gearing I have on the Yamaha at the moment is 14/50 it is really good as I have plenty of low end snap and when in top plenty of top speed for me anyway. Also with riding in the Watagans there arnt to many fuel stops so this also has to be considered,im getting easily 90kms from a tank and thats with my jetting being a tad rich also.
cheers Ollie
BTW if think you may have stirred up a hornets nest with your Biased opinions:laugh:

AnonymousI reckon 14/50 on the Yammie is good. The Wattie’s has a variety of trails, most of the ones I’ve done have been slower stuff suited to a lower geared bike. There are some quickmsection though where you can easily hit 140Km/h.
My superior KTM model is geared 14/52 which is fine in the single trail but will hit 160+ in top. Maybe you bought the wrong bike?
October 18, 2008 at 7:16 pm #109634Rossi? James Stewart too…
13/45 here. Might run it even higher, first gear is very short, and I still have plenty of power.October 18, 2008 at 8:29 pm #109635
AnonymousI’d be interested to know what Gili runs as he was saying that the bike is revving a bit at around 100Km/h. He said it still hits 150+ though.
Maybe he’s just too used to road bikes
October 19, 2008 at 5:52 am #109637im running 13/52, which is way too short for me! can 152 kmh max chickens, so going too regear to 14/50 or there abouts. i tend too be searching for the right gear a lot, so a change might just iron out my problems.

Sounds like you need to buy yourself a cheap JD jet kit
Before you go to 14/50, give 14/52 a try and see what you think. If you want I can send you a spreadsheet that calculates the changes to speed in gears, when you change parameters such as sprocket size and tyre size. If you are interested PM me your email address and I can send it.

October 19, 2008 at 6:13 am #109663your good…. i like it!! A jet kit you say? she’s stock standard so i dont know how much improvment i will get. Still interested though. i’ll pm my email for that spread sheet, cheers.
October 19, 2008 at 6:23 am #109627I’d argue that if you have time to look at the speedo you aren’t going fast enough! For what it’s worth the Vor has no speedo and the gearing is in Italian so I won’t tell you what it is.
as for Mr. Rossi, well, I heard on the grapevine he takes it up the bot bot. Or at least he will when he gets back to good ol’ Italia!:laugh:October 19, 2008 at 6:27 am #109665

Maybe that’s why before he starts a race, you see him adjusting something in his arse crack. Maybe it is a set of Ben Wah balls or butt plug:laugh:

Nigel WTF is the matter with you?
Firstly let’s deal with the cans of worms you have opened one at a time
1/ Rossi would have ridden a wheel barrow if he was paid the money that Yamaha paid him because my friend they knew he could make their bike (which was on par with a wheel barrow) competitive
2/ Gearing is relative the riding style there is no way what works for you works for anybody else, I like my bike geared fast I find it makes me ride better, I have to tackle hills harder because I cant stop and lift of again, and I use the clutch like it’s a 125 one dinger. I tried to get chicken onto the gearing I used to use in the Watagans with my old 600, yet he likes it about 4 – 6 teeth more on the back sprocket.
3/ Gearing spread sheet, gas flames, beakers, microscopes, algorithms, DNA, witch doctors, bats tails etc Just ride it, spend the 20 bucks go up one tooth on the front, go down one on the front, try it that will get it close. Rough rule of thumb 1 tooth on the front is same as 4 on the back ( I know Nigel its closer to 3.8767383937 by hey lets stick to 4 its easy ). Bigger on the front and smaller on the back fast bike, smaller on the front and bigger on the back slower big
4/ I think playing around with gearing is the fun of owning a bike, I have 3 differenet sets I use ( yes complete with chains ) for different rides, relax and play with it.

AnonymousDoesn’t hurt to throw a little science into couldron to add to the mystery of trial and error. I think it would be better to go up one tooth on the front first. Then play with the back. It’s better to have more teeth on the front from a sprocket wear point of view.
How did you end up with gearing Gili? Did you change it yourself?
October 19, 2008 at 11:16 pm #109695as soon as i get some coin together, i’ll get new chain and sprokets, probably run 14/50, give me a bit more speed!
